Harang headed back to Cincy for MRI

Shocker.

Relief appearance on two days rest, goes four innings, then returns on three days rest.

Dusty still allowed him to pitch despite getting hammered and then last night.

What was it that those Cubs fans were saying when the Reds hired Baker about pitchers arms?

Harang has struggled all year, for his standards. I will not be surprised to learn that this is something he has been battling most of the season. He hasn't been hisself far longer thant he relief experience.

He wasn't winning games, but wasn't his era around .350?

In fact he pitched really well before going to San Diego. He gave up 5 r's once 4 r's once and everything else was 3 or less before that trip and he never went less than 6 innings.

Seems about right, I can't remember it's been about two months since that happen.

Still, reverting back to that game I think he only pitched 4 innings then 4 innings again 4 days later. I don't see they damaging an arm like Aaron's. I think he has been hurt nearly all year.

I just hope they get him right, this guy is a stud and a workhorse. To me, he is their franchise player and they just need to make sure he is good before they throw him back out there.

Actually no. On May 22nd he made his start and went 5.1 innings throwing 103 pitches. The relief appearance was after 2 days rest on the 25th going 4 innings and throwing 65 pitches. Where it got even more hairy was there was a day off where he could have adjusted the rotation but he took the mound again on 3 days rest on May 29th and only went 4 innings for 73 pitches b/c he couldn't get guys out and stated after the game he knew he wasn't going to be good that night. Since the relief appearance he's gone less than 6 innings 5 times. Before that it was 1 and that was the start in the same series agains SD.

I agree. And as the stud and workhorse he should have been treated a little better. He's been thrown to the wolves.

Long overdue, but smart decision. They need to know if there is something wrong and find out now. As for Dusty and how he uses his pitchers, well all the Cubs fans made their case when the Reds hired him.

Hopefully for the Reds it will be similar to what just happened to Zambrano.

I was one that was worried about this when they hired Baker. However, one pitcher is an exception and not the rule. If it continues to happen then there's a problem...

Again, I'm hoping I was wrong...

I think Dusty has done a great job monitering Cueto and Volquez. Throwing Harang back out there after the relief experience was maybe not a good idea. But hindsight is 20/20.

I would be willing to bet Harang wanted the ball, he is a gamer.

I think he just needs a few weeks off because his arm has been bad since that relief appearance. He will come back and be himself if the MRI is negative.

Harang's 2008 season stats at the end of the relief outing in San Diego ... 78.2 IP, 75 H, 3.32 ERA, 21 BB, 72 SO

Since then ... 44.1 IP, 63 H, 7.31 ERA, 13 BB, 36 SO

There's a clear line there, guys ... and remember, some of us called Dusty on it at the time.

Did the relief outing do all the damage to Harang? Maybe not, because Harang had already been worked hard the last two years, throwing 466 innings in 2006 and 2007. All that was just one more reason not to mess around with a valuable right arm.

This is why I suggested that the Reds explore what the trade market might bring for Harang early this season. Given his workload, there was a chance this would happen sometime. Now his trade value is pretty much shot ...

He also threw Volquez that same game when he had a guy in the bullpen who should have been used in that situation. 1 starting pitcher out of 5 halfway through the year when he's obviously been overused is enough of an alarm for me. Especially from a guy who has a reputation for ruining pitchers arms.

Come on!:irked: I'm trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and you're not making it easy...
