Actually you're the one who claimed that your data was PROOF that Obama wasn't extremly liberal. All I did was present one scenario in which your data MAY not be the PROOF that you claim it is.

Astute opinion, as usual. There is very little, if anything, a career politician does that is not influenced by future political goals or aspirations.

If Obama's been voting with becoming President in mind, that almost certainly would pull his vote to the left... because during the vast majority of his time in the Senate he was a huge underdog to Hillary for the nomination, and voting left of her was an asset in that uphill climb.

What these rankings show is that the two guys who are publishing them really do not understand conservatism.

 

If you really want to get a better idea of how conservative or liberal a candidate is, look at how a liberal organization such as the National Journal or the Americans for Democratic Action ranks members of Congress. Organizations like the American Conservative Union do a credible job of ranking members on a conservative scale.

 

No offense, but the Voteview.com rankings are a joke. Why would McCain be having problems with conservatives if he was really the sixth most conservative US Senator?

I provided links to two respected liberal sites that publish rankings and one conservative site. Any site which Paul Krugman recommends and is regularly cited as proof on the Daily Kos and the Democratic Underground that McCain is a conservative is not very objective. Liberals are doing their best to paint Obama as less liberal than he is and McCain as more conservative than he is. It is all about helping Obama get the moderate and independent votes.

 

I have not looked at the ACU or ADA rankings lately, but it just makes good sense to me to look how organizations of conservatives or liberals rank candidates based on the votes that they deem important to their own political agendas.
