Obama gaffe on Nuclear Weapons

Featured Replies

Q: In Afghanistan or Pakistan, is there any circumstance where you would be prepared or willing to use nuclear weapons to defeat terrorism and Osama bin Laden[?]"

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Thursday he would not use nuclear weapons ''in any circumstance.'' ''I think it would be a profound mistake for us to use nuclear weapons in any circumstance,'' Obama said, with a pause, ''involving civilians.'' Then he quickly added, ''Let me scratch that. There's been no discussion of nuclear weapons. That's not on the table.''

Man can't even make a decision on nuclear weapons in an interview and some of you want him to be the man making that decision at possibly 3 am...........

Experienced politicians make gaffes on the campaign trail. Inexperienced politicians make more. Obama is racking up an impressive number of gaffes so early in the campaign.

Decisions to use the bomb should be difficult. I would have a greater problem with someone who thought it was easy.

Did you hear his gaffe from his Memorial Day speech?

He was trying to score with America's veterans, he's frequently talked about his grandfather "who served in Patton's army." He has now added a new episode to his World War II repertoire: the uncle who liberated Auschwitz.

"I had an uncle who was one of the, um, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps. And the story in our family is that when he came home he just went up in the attic and he didn't leave the house for six months."

The Russians liberated Auschwitz, which is in Polland btw, U.S. armies were still on the western borders of Germany, a thousand miles away.

Decisions should be difficult - agreed.

However, a presidential candidate should have no problem answering the question that he was asked in a manner that would suggest he had given the matter some forethought.

I could have given a better answer. (Such as, "While I will not take any option off the table in response to a terror attack, I am not going to answer your hypothetical question. Our enemies know that they can expect swift, certain, and severe consequences in the event of an attack on this country and I am just going to leave it at that. Next question?")

Obama's answer demonstrated his inexperience he needs to rehearse more and pray that Sam Nunn is willing to join the ticket.

Yes, that was another gaffe, although not nearly as bad as Hillary's sniper fire lie. Obama's great uncle (his mother was an only child) did help liberate a different camp.

I am looking forward to the foreign policy debates between McCain and Obama - assuming that Obama does not duck McCain the way that he has Hillary the past few weeks.

I'd feel much better about someone being hesitant than someone trigger happy.

It scares me if you wouldn't feel the same way.

Shouldn't the future leader of the free world sound like he had given the matter some thought previously? If he had not given the matter any thought, then he should have simply refused to answer a hypothetical question and then arranged for somebody to ask him a similar question at a later time. One of the things that killed John Kerry's chances was his tendency to think as he spoke, sometimes contradicting himself during the same interview.

I agree. Additionally, there are too many variables to consider in an actual scenario to think that his answer in this hypothetical situation has any meaning.

Not using them ''in any circumstance," is NOT being hesitant.

The CURRENT leader of the free world has been in similar situations on numerous occasions, and a lot of people love him regardless (well, a lot of people on BGP love him).

I'll be honest, I haven't done as much homework on the candidates as I should, but I get the feeling I'll be left with better choices to vote for in this election than the last one. Kerry v. Bush was like asparagus v. brussell sprouts (in this scenario the decision maker is a carnivore).

"with a pause 'involving civilians'..." His brain may not be working well, but at least it's trying.

How in the world do you view this election any better then the last?

His brain caught what a stupid comment it was. Nice recovery wall all it was at best.

Everything about Kerry and Bush seemed so FAKE. Not to say things will be much different this time around, but with McCain and Obama (not so much with Hilary, she seems fake to me) they seem to be SLIGHTLY (notice the emphasis on "SLIGHTLY") more passionate and really caring about this. Not quite as groomed for Presidency like the frat boys of 04, which make them - again, slightly - more real to me.

My favorite George W. Bush moment was when somebody asked him why he wanted to go to war with Iraq and he responded with some fire in his eyes saying (and I paraphrase:) "Nobody WANTS to go to war, do you hear me? NOBODY." then he lost me at trying to justify why we needed to, but the point is he seemed like a man who at least CARED and not some billboard. Obama gets a free pass because of his lack of experience, and McCain because he's old and boring, but when they look like robots on stage I can at least barely see a flicker of humanity in them.

I guess it's odd that I see it that way, because Hilary is the most passionate on stage but there's something about her that screams "PHONEY".
