I've been a fan of both the Sox and Pats for quite a while. If you really must know, after my freshman year of HS, 7 going on 8 years ago, I went to Boston and absolutely loved the city and sports atmosphere. Since then I've been a fan of pretty much all Boston sports teams.

May 23, 200818 yr Better known as an excuse for inferiority... Yes the Red Sox have had everyone's number the last few years, that's no secret. The real question is how many of the "fans" of the Red Sox now, were fans in the 80's and 90's? That's what I can't stand... Count me as one...when I started playing tee-ball as a kid, I played for the Red Sox. On top of that, on our old satellite dish, NESN (New England Sports Network) was one of the channels we got, so I watched the Red Sox play a lot starting in the mid 80's (the year Buckner choked the series away). So, I suppose those two reasons are why I started off as a Sox fan and I've never changed. I like the Reds also, but the Sox have always been my favorite team. Any team that starts to win big gets a lot of bandwagon fans. That's just a fact of life.

Ahh...I don't care. I just said that to note that was the first time I can remember watching a lot of baseball...I was devastated when they blew that series. You can blame whoever you want. Buckner gets the attention because he couldn't make a play on a slow-rolling ground ball that a majority of tee-ballers could make. Boneheaded plays are always remembered. Like Chris Webber's timeout...Michigan was behind in that game, yet that play is viewed as the one that cost them the game.

Stanley didn't help any with his wild pitch that tied the game and what a lot of people don't remember is he didn't get over to cover first on Wilson's grounder so even if Buckner had come up with the ball he probably wouldn't have beaten Mookie to the bag so Stanley would still have had to have gotten another out to preserve things. As for Buckner, yeah he should have caught the ball but he really shouldn't have been in the game at all. Dave Stapleton was a much better fielder at that point of his career and should have been in there but McNamara left Buckner in so he could be on the field for the final out. I like most true Red Sox fans (see the ovation he got on Opening Day at Fenway this year) remember Billy Buck more for the grit he showed all season by driving in 102 runs that season on an ankle that was so bad he had to wear hightop cleats back when no one wore them. Besides the Sox had a 3-0 lead in Game 7 and should have won that one too. Okay, I'm done. Where's the Tylenol? I've got to go put the 2004 and 2007 DVDs in so I'll feel better.

I would fall into the "too young to know what was really going on" category...:lol: (I think I was about 8 or 9 at that time.) But, I'm a Sox fan through and through. Seeing them come from 3-0 down to beat the Yankees is one of the greatest sports moments ever.

Both certainly deserve their share of the blame, as does Billy Buck, but John McNamara (mgr) is the true goat. Why in the world a gimpy Buckner was not removed for the much more defensively nimble Dave Stapleton (or even Glenn Hoffman) @ 1st is at least as big a gaffe imo as Grady Little riding a horse named Pedro too long in game 7, 2003 ALCS. I've been a die hard Sox supporter since Game 1, 1975 World Series. I was 10 & the failures of my team since have certainly made their most recent successes much sweeter!:thumb:
