Okay, there is an African-American candidate who perfectly matches everything you want as a President. There is a female candidate who perfectly matches everything you want as a President.

 

They are perfectly even in your mind but their race and gender.

 

Personality-wise, you even like them equally.

 

The election of which one do you think would go further to help this country move down the road in either race relations or gender relations?

Given those conditions, then I would see that the country needs an African-American male to be elected worse than it needs a woman. My reasoning is that by electing a conservative African-American male president, the damage done by decades of creeping socialism would begin to be reversed. Young black males are incarcerated at an extremely high rate and they need better high profile role models than professional athletes and shady civil rights leaders like Sharpton, Jackson, and Fahrakhan.

 

If a liberal must be elected, I would much rather see a typical white man elected. However, I would be far happier seeing a conservative black man elected instead of any of the three sorry excuses of candidates still in the running in 2008.

Unfortunately, sometimes what is good for the country stands in direct contrast to what the people want.

So true. We need true leadership. I don't care if their black or white male or female, Asian American or Irish American or just a plain or mutt like me.

We need someone to tell people no- that's not the role of government. Someone who stop bowing and take a stand. Sometimes we need to sallow a bitter pill to be healthy unfortunately too many political types’ only wants to feed us sweets.

I don't think we advance the discussion of race or gender politics, nor do we attain a different culturla "level," one iota by electing either. I don't think the rest of the world is going to suddenly say, "America has finally gotten with it," if we elect a black man or a woman, and I don't think the culturally narrow-minded are suddenly going to see the light because a black man or woman sits in the leadership chair. As Exhibit #1, we have elected female governors, black senators, etc. etc., and I think the discussion has gone down, not up.

 

Culture is not ever going to be defined by pigment or chromosome.

Other major countries, for example Germany have elected a female head of state/chief executive. If we do, I agree with Hearsay, that they won't say "America gets it."

 

IMO, either one would be historical for the American Perspective, but I don't think we need one choice more than the other right now.

I think that woman being elected would do more for the culture than an African American. The reason being is that some people believe that women can hold such positions of leadership, what a better way to get rid of that stereotype then to elect a woman to the most powerful office in the world. Once more it will be proven that men and women are equal!

I believe an African-American would be more widely accepted in the US and around the world, I just pray it isn't the current African-American candidate.

I'm assuming that the African-American candidate is male. Personally, it makes no difference to me. However, concerning the nation as a whole, I think it would be better to elect the male for the simple reason that he would command more respect when dealing with Muslim nations. Giving concessions to a female would be difficult for the leaders in Iran, Iraq, etc.

In the area that I am from, in one word... yes! One church has women deacons in the entire county. They are looked upon because according to every church they did not follow the Bible.

You misunderstood my post. I sit in the pews of a Baptist church in Central Kentucky where women are looked down upon. Putting a woman in the Presidency is not going to change that. Noone is going to look up from the pew and say "Hallelujah, praise be to Jesus, I have seen the light!"
