Volquez has suprised me. He had allowed 14 homers in 80 Innings for Texas but has been much better, to say the least with the Reds. Volquez has walked 26 in 48 1/3 Innings so far this year which is a lot but has been almost unhittable otherwise. Do you think that Cueto would be better served by being selectively wild? What I mean by that is trusting his stuff to make the hitters hit his pitches instead getting so much of the plate. He's got good enough stuff that I don't think a few walks would hurt him nearly as much as the longball, particularly at GABP.
May 17, 200818 yr I think the early scouting report says to wait for him to miss up with the heater and hack away when he does. It's really the only thing he throws that gets hit hard.That's usually a result of overthrowing and/or trying too hard to pinpoint location. That's pretty much the same problem Volquez had in Texas, but with experience he learned to miss low instead of high...
May 17, 200818 yr Author Homeruns by Blake, Pronk and Peralta off Cueto in the 6th have tied the game at 3. That's now 12 Homeruns allowed by Cueto in 51 1/3 Innings. Gametime, I told you homers were going to be an issue for Cueto, he catches too much of the plate too often. I also said that most of his homers are solo homers, like all of them were tonight. There have been some very good pitchers in major league history that are prone to the long ball. J. Santana being one current one. I'll take an effort like Cueto gave tonight everytime out.

If Cueto continues at his current pace (1 homerun allowed every 4.2 IP) and reaches 200 Innings Pitched he'll be right at 50 homeruns allowed. That's a concern in GABP.
