Talking to ____ (her son) right now about the crash and showing him pictures of friends who were lost and friends who survived...it really hits home this year knowing my son is the same age I was when it happened.

This is a post from a co-worker who was supposed to be on the trip I'm on. Her husband was in the crash and lost his niece in the crash.

Also a documentary about the impact was shown at the Performing Arts Center at John Hardin High School between Elizabethtown and Radcliff.

I had always heard that Mahoney entered 71 South from an exit ramp but the story in yesterday's Enquirer said he was traveling in the NB lane and crossed the median. This makes much more sense since the nearest exit is many milles away from the crash site.

That seems a lot less likely than him getting on the exit lane, given how winding I-71 is in that area. Especially so when you consider that crossing over in that area would send a vehicle very, very airborne given the dropoff into the median.

I remember the crash as if it happened yesterday, what a sad and horrifying accident.

 

As The Scribe spoke about, many safety enhancements have come out of the crash. My cousin owns a Bus Company that sells school busses as well as the smaller "Hotel"shuttle busses etc. and he has always told me about the emergency exits that busses must have including one on the roof etc. all because of the crash.

 

It got me to thinking about other tragedies that happened in this area that has changed safety in other area's. If anyone remembers the Air Canada plane that had to make an emergency landing at CVG due to fire in the plane. 23 passengers were killed including George Curtis Mathis. BEcause of the tragedy several safety enhancements were made to all aircraft such as smoke detectors and emergency lighting leading to exit doors are now mandatory on all passenger flights.

 

Then we have the most infamous tragedy in this area, the Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire. Another tragfedy I can remember as if it were yesterday. I lost my baseball coach in that fire, his wife got out and he got out also but they were seperated and he thought she was still inside and went back in to find her when one of the walls collapsed and fell on him killing him. The one safety requirment that has affected all public buildings due to the fire was the creation of lighted Exit signs and emergency lighting in hallways etc.

I just don't see how he could drive for multiple miles in the wrong direction without realizing he was going the wrong way. I know he was over 20% but that seems hard to believe for me.

I agree, but him "crossing over the median" seems a lot less likely when you consider that particular stretch of I-71 is probably the most dangerous along its route, given how curvy and hilly the road is there along the river bluffs.
