State AAU tourneys next weekend

Featured Replies

Ouch!

It is Sunday. So much for the hype about the new and improved KY Players! You don't expect a team touted with 7 "D1" players to lose by 17.

Sounds like Shining Stars could have its hands full with Higher Level in the semis. These two teams split their two games last year in close games. Shining Stars have improved their roster since last year, but I'm sure Higher Level is improved too. Thomas is a good scorer. Shining Stars are playing with a thin roster right now.

I watched them play a couple games this weekend. IMO there was atleast 4 maybe 6 that do have that ability.

Ricardo Johnson

Gelawn Guy

Aaron Crosby

Elijah Pittman

IMO those 4 are sure fire D-1 players.

Jeremiah Johnson

Some other player I didn't know who was 6-6

Those 2 could possibly be, but have a lot of work to do.

Who is the point guard from Jeffersontown, I heard he is on the KY Players now.

I assume its Crosby. Hes not really a point guard though, atleast it didn't seem that way. They had another guard that came in. He may have been from J'town, Im not sure.

Also, I watched the 16u Derek Smith team and was very impressed with Stenzel, Whitaker, Miller, and a kid from Shelby Valley.

You are right about the J-town guards. I was impressed with Whitaker. Gabbard and Popp (Boone guards) did very well too.

I agree that the first 4 have the most potential for D1 because of their athleticism and size. I don't think that Jeremiah Johnson has D1-caliber skills at this time. Nobody else stood out to me.

JJ needs to improve his shooting, he can play D and rebound, but his shot is not very good.

It was either sit out his last AAU tourney or tough it out and play with the back pain, he chose to play. He tried physical therapy at Kort all last week and used meds to reduce the pain and it helped enough to take the court. Hopefully the folks at Kort can have him ready for this weekend. And make no mistake, the defenses were tough.

His last tourney? He is not going to play in July?

I was looking forward to travel and watch him play this summer. I know the Coach from Team Kentucky has to be disappointed that he won't be traveling with them. By far thier best player and takes a lot of pressure off the other players.

Who is on Team Ky roster this year? I was hoping to get to Lex to watch them & the rest of the teams this weekend but family obligations came first.

No, just his last AAU State tournament. He will be playing in the majors during July and August and a few camps.

But they do have a MUCH deeper bench, you have to admit that. ;)

I never said they didn't. Almost every player on the team is on equal footing talent wise. It helps when you can bring players off the bench and not have a drop off in talent.

The sad thing is that the coach still has very little idea about the strengths and weaknesses of his players. The longer he is with him, the better they will get.

For anyone that saw the 16u, how did Cosby look?

I was more impressed with Elisha Justice running the point . He's a better team player and plays better defense. I don't think people notice how bad a kid plays defense sometimes but I would say that 80-90% of the Shinning Stars Field goals were lay-ups. Hatfield and Stenzel were impressive at times and need more touches. They sure need to improve on defense to be a good team.

I agree that they need to improve their team defense.

Justice is a fine player, but I think Gabbard is a better point guard (ball handler, assist maker, creator/penetrator, and scorer). Popp at the 2 is a good penetrator, shooter, defender, and team player. I believe Popp had a couple of 3s in the championship game, and Gabbard made a couple of nice outside shots too. Gabbard and Popp could not be pressed the whole tournament. Both scored double figures against Derek Smith while shooting for good percentages, and they both averaged double figures for the tournament.

I'm not sure how many points Justice had, but I don't remember him being a factor or scoring much in the championship game except maybe 1 of the couple of 3-pointers he took. I do think he should play more than he did. He is a very unselfish team player. Justice does not look like he is 6'0" to me as someone claimed on this board. Gabbard is 6'0", Popp is 5'11", and both looked an inch or two taller than him. No doubt, all 3 are fine guards and seem like good young men.

Stepp was not hitting many of the threes he took.

Stenzel was impressive on offense. He needs to continue to improve on defense/quickness.

Derek Smith needs more inside game. Miller tends to drift outside. I know he is also a good outside shooter, but I think he could do more inside too because of his wide, strong body.

Miller is a fine player but likes it out on the floor and he is badly needed on the inside. The team's inside game is not the best. Gabbard and Popp are very talented guards. I just don't think Justice gets enough playing time. Stepp is a three man and that's it.
