I will make my case for CovCath Junior Catcher Luke Maile:

 

First you must remember that Maile was last year's POY, so a lot of pressure was on him to repeat, and a lot of teams tried to shut him down and some even did, but over the course of the entire season including the post season these were Maile unofficial stats.

Think about these stats for a minute if you will! Luke Maile is now the only Baseball player in the long, long history of CovCath Varsity Baseball, to record two season of 50 plus hits in a single season. Understand only 18 players have had 50 or more hits in a single season and Luke is the only player to have done it twice. 53 in 2007 and 62 in 2008! Luke Maile now holds the record for run batted in at CovCath 66 in 2007 and runs scored at CovCath 61 in 2008. How is that for knocking them in and then being on base enough to score that many runs.

 

So you think someone else deserves the POY in 2008? Okay then, show me their stats.

Impressive stats by Luke, no doubt. It is very difficult to determine who should be the POY between Luke and Zac when comparing stats of players who are on two different teams with different talent levels. Both teams make it to the regional final of their respective regions. Scott came from nowhere, but arguably in a weaker region, IMO. Zac batted 31 less times largely due to the talent levels of the two teams. Zac just got fewer opportunities, yet he hit 3 more HRs (10 HRs broke the record for Scott). If he had 31 more ABs, he would logically hit an addtional 4 or 5 HRs if he maintained that pace. I believe he saw less good pitches batting down in the line up vs. Luke who led off for CCH. Luke walked 11 more times, but had 40% more Plate Appearances (149 - 106). Zac was definitely more valuable to his team than Luke. Difficult vote. All things are not equal, but it is close enough to me. If they are fairly equal, my vote goes to the Senior - Zac Adams.

Based on information from the coach, Cory holds almost every record single season and career at Boone Co. HS. All things considered, with the injury by Mark Reed, Cory was very valuable to the success of Boone Co. this year and past.

Does anyone have Nichols hitting numbers on the season? We all know the type of year he had pitching, but if he hit the way I think he did based on the regionals, he should even be a stronger candidate than mentioned in this thread. He had to lead his team, be the #1 starter, # 1 closer, 3rd baseman, and if his hitting numbers are up over .450 with some RBI's he is the MVP.

I would be very curious to know what Nichols' stats were for the season. Anyone from Dixie got them? I know he had a fine year pitching and I believe also put up some nice numbers hitting. Certainly not Maile-type hitting numbers, but his pitching was huge this year.

I will say one thing these are some massive number by multiple candidates!

 

I will hold my vote until I see Nichols hitting numbers...

When is the POY announced? Along with the all NKY team?

As brought to my attention in a PM I must correct two records.

 

1) Maile had 5 triples (not 6) and the triple record was 6 (not 7) in a season, sorry for my typo.

 

2) Chad Cogswell also has had two 50 plus seasons of hits, 1992 (53) & 1993 (57).

 

I am sorry for slighting Chad.

Wouldn't bother me one bit to have anyone of these fine young men win the POY as all four young men (Adams, Farris, Nichols, and Maile) are not only outstanding baseball players, but come from wonderful families who make sure their sons are good people also. Congrats to all four, their schools and coaches, and most importantly their families, for helping them become more than just baseball players, as all four are great role models for the grade school kids to follow.

I would agree with Adams, Farris, Elliot, Maile - maybe Nichols at Dixie. I'm not certain about his stats because the Dixie doesn't turn them in to the Enquirer, but he's a fine pitcher.

 

Nichols looked like the best pitcher up here from what I saw, and he went 10 for 10 in the Regional Tournament.I don't know how he hit the rest of the year, but he was the best player in this years tournament.
