Because D1 schools offer scholarships based on athletic ability and what they project you to do on the next level.

 

All-State selections are made based on stats and notoriety (among other things). It's simple really. You can play at a small school and play against a fairly weak schedule and put up HUGE numbers. That will most likely get you on the all-state team; however, that does not make you a Division 1 player.

VanHoose was soft! Bender was to athletic and physical for him. Lamont Barnes to athletic and physical for him. Harold Swanagan was too physical for him but very limited offensively. Did you see when the kid from Indy Pike dunked on him (VanHoose) in the KY/IN game? Never happens to the other guys. Van Hoose had a solid career at Marshall but he was overrated on the state level. As far as Bender in college, he had issues. I've already acknowledged that, but head to head he eats VanHoose. Bender probably avg. about 8 in a limited role at UofL. Just like Caracter though as far as the 'tude! And DC tears up every big man in the state but Barnes,Bender, Estill and maybe Brian Thornton IMO. Thornton (Vandy & Xavier) was slept on majorly by the way.

 

Your right he (Van Hoose) only helped his team win a state championship and a state runner-up.

 

Getting dunked does not make you soft. The greats have been dunked on before. He may not have been as physical or athletic as some of those other players but as far as HS goes, Van Hoose was a great player.

Bender won it all as a soph. Killed Scott County that was loaded, I think. All the greats have been dunked on true but evidently you didnt see it cause it showed he was soft! Did Vanhoose ever match up with them? Of course, if he played againsty UHA in 95 or 96, when Barnes and Swanagan were there, he would have to had matched up against those two and Isiah Victor.

Wasn't Bender the one who said he was going to declare for the NBA draft after his junior year of high school - it was in the paper if I remember right. The whole situation ended up being a bad joke...

Yeah Young and dumb can be a career killer. But that shows you how highly thought of he was on a national level. Most people had him like top 10 as an underclassman. Statements like that made fans dislike him. He told a reporter that there was no other candidate for Mr. Basketball but him as a soph. He always said wild stuff. So say what you want about his choice of quotes but you cant deny he had talent and he produced on the high school level! The whole point of my response is that voting isnt done strictly by on the court production and talent! Name another player that was nationally respected, Won a state championship as a soph, and played superb at state. And his play never dropped off, but he wasnt Mr.Basketball. Rick Jones made his name as a soph. and it stuck. If a bunch of kids did the same it would have went down very different. Put him in the same region as Paintsville and he puts up 25 and 15 nightly. The 7th region that year was loaded and he still put up numbers.

I don't think UK didn't recruit because he was soft. It was his lack of athletic ability. He tried to take a charge. Is that so wrong? Look at the record books and see who is one of the top shot blockers in KY HS history.

I would have paid money to see Bender go through one week of practice under Coach Runyon. He would have either really played to his potential and averaged 40 and 25 or he would have quit or been kicked off the team.

I know plenty of people that arent blessed athletically that still play with that intangible heart factor. Look at the big boy for Notre Dame, Harangody. Never going to say he's as athletic as UConn's kids but he competes. And he didnt have a tenth of the hype of VanHoose. VanHoose didnt have that intangible an he got exposed in that KY/IN All-star game. And if he's got any type coordination he better be one of the top shot blockers ever, he's six-ten in a vertically challenged region and state. Jared carpenter had more fight to him to me. Kentucky didnt want him cause he was soft, didnt have enough go about him. Bet the boy Harrelson UK is recruiting isnt much of an athlete either but I bet he's got a motor!

VanHoose was more than solid at Marshall. He came out being one of Marshall's best to play there. I know it aint the SEC, but if he could do what he did at Marshall, I have no doubt he would have put up better numbers than Bender put up.

 

VanHoose didn't have a motor? No heart? Are we talking about the same person? Check this stuff out. You don't get this from no motor or heart.

J.R. Vanhoose, with one of the best individual performances anyone has ever seen at the Sweet 16 ...

I don't think kids from the 6th/7th region are over looked...when is the last time one of those overlooked players has gone on to receive a D-! scholarship...answer' none' Come on ' the college coaches don't care what area...if they can play , they'll come looking.

I think Vanhoose was very effective at Marshall. I think too many fans want to see a show - dunks, postering, etc. Activity in my opinion is too often confused with effectiveness. His numbers don't lie.
