As a registered democrat who doesn't believe in either candidate, he has the right to vote in the primary for the candidate that he feels is most likely to lose in the fall.

I'll agree it's his right but I don't think it is right. The primary is to pick the candidates that the party thinks should be the next president. If you don't want either of them or you want one to lose then don't vote.

Maybe by voting for whom someone feels is the least qualified is a way to tell the party you aren't satisfied with the direction of the party.

Just for the record, I did vote for the one that best lines up for the Republican to beat. I did that to see the poll results more than anything.

Obama I have real issues with.

Hillary, I CANNOT STAND!!!!!!!!!!!

So, either one turns my stomach.

But abstaining is not an option for me. Not sure who I will vote for but leaning towards Obama.

LBBC, I have actually thought about this on several occassions in relation to you. Let me preface what I am going to say by mentioning that I tend to agree with very much of what you have to say. I know your spiritual beliefs are very important to you ,and I respect that immensely. I must admit I am somewhat confused. You are a registered Democrat even though apparently you abhor much of what Democrats stand for. If there is one issue that you consistently acknowledge is most important to you, it is abortion. And you have indicated on more than one occassion that you are leaning towards voting for Obama in May. I don't know if you could find a more liberal person in Congress on the issues that matter most to you, including abortion. I say with the utmost respect, I find it somewhat disingenous to cast a ballot for someone you are basically diametrically opposed to. If abortion was a make or break issue for me, there is no way in hell that I could vote for someone that I knew whose views were so opposed to my belief system. If abortion matters to you as much as you say, you will abstain when you get in that booth.

You say you are a registered Democrat b/c you want to vote for local Democrats in the primary. I know that are many counties where it is advantageous to be registered Democrat and then there are Republican counties where you don't want many influential people to know you are Democrat. I was born Democrat and will never be registered otherwise(unless there are unforseen changes). I have voted for local Republicans before( 9 GOP versus 2 Democrats) in a general election. I appreciate that your loyalty to your Democrat friends supercedes your loyalty to the party that better defines your beliefs, but it does put you in the predicament you are in now. If I completely despised one candidate and found the other's views to be morally repugnant, I would have no choice but to abstain. I believe more than anyone that it important to go to the polls. You are going to do just that.I don't think it is a big deal at all to just abstain with that one vote in May and then vote for the old white guy in November. Just my thoughts on your quandry. You seem like a gret person and I know you will pray about it and do what you think is right. I just think if abortion is truly that important for you, you will abstain. What is McCain's record on abortion? I know he is pretty moderate on a lot of things. What if there were two candidates in a general election that were staunch pro-choice? Then what do you do? As much as it would hurt me to do so, I would have to abstain.

As far as the general election, I am going to have some issues with both of the candidates. I hope I won't have to abstain!

Great post and you summed up my feelings on it in a nutshell. Very accurate in what I am dealing with.

In November, I wrote in my wife's name for governor because I could not find it in myself to cast a ballot for either.

I have threatened on here to write in Fastbreak's name.;):sssh:

Honestly, I don't believe my faith would let me cast a vote for the person who I feel would be easiest to beat in November. I just don't feel comfortable in that would be what Jesus would do.

McCain was not as strong on the abortion issue in 2000 than GW was and why I went to GW for support in 2000. He is not as strong with it as Huckabee was but he is my best choice now.

I guess I'm too ruthless. Elections are about winning. If you believe a certain candidate needs to win based upon your beliefs, then you do whatever you can within the law to help that person win. That is what it is about. Time and time again we have been shown there is no morality, ethics, mores, or code of conduct that comes with pulling the ballot trigger. Just the law or not the law.

You are a Democrat because you want to be able to vote Democrat fo local candidates. A lot of local candidates probably oppose abortion. The national ones don't. YOU SHOULDN'T BE ASKED TO CHANGE PARTIES TO FIT THE CANDIDATE, THE CANDIDATE SHOULD MODIFY HIS/HER STANCES TO FIT YOU THE VOTER. If they don't, they're not going to get your vote. End of story.

If you want John McCain to beat the other candidate in November, vote for the Democratic candidate, as you are allowed to do, that you feel has the least chance of success against him.

Why does abortion matter how you vote? You have had a Pro Life pres. for 8 years and nothing has changed. Why dont you just vote for the person the person who likes dogs more than cats. That is as much of a political issue as abortion.

We're not going to debate the abortion issue in this thread. You may start another if you wish. LBBC feels strongly about it and that's the reason he votes, and that is good enough for purposes of this thread.

My bad , Just a pet peeve of mine.

After I think about, I think I am going to do a write-in, RAM !

I won't go into it here, but you are far from correct.

Google Partial Birth Abortion.

Google the two Supreme Court Justices that GW appointed.

You make a convincing argument. But which one is more beatable, Obama or Hillary?

This is going to sound mean and I don't mean it to so I apologize ahead of time. If you want to vote for who's more beatable just change parties. If you can't support a Dem in the state and national levels then you aren't a Democrat IMO. At the local level it doesn't matter one iota. You're just playing into the hands of people like Drugg-o Limbaugh and you need to realize that. Either abstain or switch parties b/c you're not helping those of us who actually want to see a winner that will win the general election. You're a one issue voter and the Democratic party is not a one-issue party.

I hope it's over by the time it gets to KY but if it isn't I wouldn't vote if I were in your shoes.

I apologize for being harsh but I don't see a point in trying to bring down something you claim to be a part of.

The bolded....what are you talking about?.....:confused::confused:

It matters no one iota when there are 4 Democrat candidates for sheriff or judge exec (usually one for Republican and I don't think I have ever voted Republican in a local general election) and I wouldn't get to vote for the one I would support and help them make it to the general in November.

For what it is worth, I think you are the one should change to another party and quit tearing down the Democrat party that I once supported. And did so gladly. Heck, I voted for Michael Dukakkis but became to realize that the Dems quit representing the everyday person but rather fringe and special interest groups.

In every local election I've ever voted in I vote the person. Republicans and Democrats don't matter hardly at all in the county and small city. I voted for an Independent county prosecutor, a Republican Sheriff, and a Democrat mayor in my hometown in Ohio since they all seemed to be the best qualified. The national political party policies do not affect small town government and if it does then there are big problems with me. National Democratic Party and local elections are apples and oranges IMO.
