District Games

Featured Replies

With the recent change in the playoff format, and conversations about travel, I was wondering: how far do teams currently travel for district games?

Raceland currently travels one and a half hours to Lexington Christian Academy, and one and a half hours to Paris, and vise versa for district games.

With the new alignment, Raceland could travel less, or at least no more, for a playoff game then we do for two of our district games.

Any thoughts? I just don't see travel time and expense as much of a valid reason for a playoff format. I see it as an excuse. How many baseball teams from Kentucky went to Florida this year? How many basketball teams traveled over two hours to play in a holiday tournament?

I can't see District 1-5 being the only district in the state that has four teams traveling a hour and a half for district games (Raceland, Fariview, LCA, Paris).

Manual travels 3.19 miles to St. X, 4.47 miles to Butler, and a whopping 9.13 miles to PRP (yahoo maps).:p

Campbellsville travels over 2 hours to all away district games:

To Lynn Camp > 2 hours and 10 minutes

To Williamsburg > 2 hours and 25 minutes

To Clinton Co > 2 hours

Not much of a response, I don't guess travel time/expense is really that much of an issue for playoffs after all.

Harlan goes 33 miles to Pineville, 58 miles to Jenkins or 60 miles to Hazard. I doubt anyone can top Campbellsville.

I don't Clinton County's trips may be a little farther to Williamsburg and Lynn Camp. Not sure though.

Ram, you are off base here.

Look at Class 4A District 7 and Class 4A District 8.

District-4-7- Bell County, Knox Central, Madison Southern, McCreary Central, Rockcastle County

District-4-8- Boyd County, Greenup County, Lawrence County, Rowan County

In District 7, the longest trip would be from McCreary Central to Madison Southern -- I am guessing an hour and a half.

In District 8, the longest trip would be from Greenup County or Lawrence County to Rowan County -- about an hour and a quarter.

The longest Interdistrict game would be from McCreary Central (on the Tennessee border) and Greenup County (on the Ohio border) -- that's about 4 hours of travel time!

Sun Szu, apparently you have misunderstood my point. To start with the four hour travel for playoff games, versus the one and a half travel time for inter district games, as you refer to, is the exception not the rule.

Since you are using 4A as an example. Look at 4-3 verses 4-4, say Breckinridge Co versus Bulitt East, Larue Co, Marion Co, or North Bullitt. Or how about 4-5 versus 4-6, say Bourbon Co, Franklin Co, Harrison Co, or Pendleton Co. versus Boyle Co, East Jessamine, Lexington Catholic, or West Jessamine. In Western Kentucky, which typically has longer travel times, the times are extended, and for 4-7 and 4-8, as you stated, the times are extended.

How far is it from Greenup Co to Coca Beech, Fl.?

Anyone can find one example to support their stance, but look at the whole state. And look at other sports versus football. The only time travel time comes up in when people want to play other people, and not who they have been matched up with.

I did not hear anyone complaining about travel time and expense when everyone went to Florida for baseball games, I did not hear anyone complain about having to travel to Lexington for the Sweat 16. Has the gas prices went up that much in the last week?

You cant use Coca Beach as an example. Regular fans dont go to those games, and those game are sort like spring training. We are talking about playoff games that all football fans want to attend, its totally different than a few games at the beginning of the season that noboby but parents really attend anyway.

Let's move the Sweet 16 to Springfield, Mass!

After all, it is the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Wouldn't that be a great place for the top 16 high basketball teams in Kentucky play for the State Basketball Championship?

Slippery slopes are by their nature -- slippery.

The bottom line is this:

Play within the districts first and let the District Champions play for the Regional Championship.

Raceland currently travels one and a half hours to Lexington Christian Academy.
