I will venture to say Guns n Roses. I dont think Rock and roll almost died in that era. Some of us old folks hung on to it during the dark days of the 80's. And by the way, you will undoubtedly see those ugly clothes and hairdos again. Those things tend to come back around.
April 15, 200818 yr I have to say Quiet Riot...Also Ozzy/Judas Priest/Iron Maiden... Metallica did not get mainstream popular until 91...
April 16, 200818 yr Author I should've made it more clear... New bands that came out in the 80's era... We had all the hair bands, and some "bubble gum" music... So who do you think came out in the 80s that saved the face of rock music in that era?
April 16, 200818 yr I am from the 80's and find it interesting that at many high school games the "Pump us up Music" is mostly 80's rock!!!!!
April 16, 200818 yr I should've made it more clear... New bands that came out in the 80's era... We had all the hair bands, and some "bubble gum" music... So who do you think came out in the 80s that saved the face of rock music in that era? Interesting question. Personally, I actually liked a lot of the mainstream 80's music, but I think I know what you're getting at. There's a lot of factors that go into this. First off, a lot of bands, like Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers, had a strong following in the 80's but are considered more to be 90's bands. Of course, that fact alone could make you think that they were indeed saviors in a sense because it was bands like them who kept the music alive through the following decades. Of course, if you were to ask a person in 1989 who was going to go down in history as the superior rock band between Guns 'N Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers, you'd probably have most people answering the former, while today we can see through longevity alone it's the latter. Not to say Guns 'N Roses didn't do anything for rock AT THE TIME, because they did (I know a few BGPers that would argue against that), but I see the answer to this question being somebody who carried rock along. Let's be honest, GnR couldn't keep themselves alive, so I don't feel comfortable letting them get to claim to have kept rock alive. Then of course, one could go on and talk about the different kinds of rock. Alternative/indie/college rock was more or less born in the 80's, and that's my favorite kind of music. Earlier, bands like REM, The Cure, The Police and later Smashing Pumpkins and the beginings of the Seattle sound and grunge rock began to emerge in the 80's. And let's not forget about punk rock... The Ramons, Joy Division, The Clash... so many great, inspirational bands. On the mainstream level, perhaps I'd have to say that Aerosmith was the most straight rock 'n roll savior of the 80's. There's actually pretty solid parallel between Aerosmith and rock 'n roll during the 80's. They came out with one weak album in 1984, then turn around and revive strongly with great albums in '87 and '89. That's my best answer for now.

April 16, 200818 yr Author Where does Bon Jovi fit in? (I am asking as a child of the 60's-70's). I thought back then that was "sissy rock"... I thought they were sissy, along with groups like Poison. Then he (Jon Bon Jovi) comes along now a-days and is trying to take his sound and cross it over into country music. There was probably only one song of his that I can say, okay yeah that is okay... And it was the song for Young Guns movie, "Wanted Dead or Alive"...

Our boy Axel Rose I think was the problem. Pretty much Velvet Revolver is Guns-n-Roses, just without Axel Rose. They were pretty nasty looking, I think they came straight off of the Sunset Strip in California!
April 16, 200818 yr What about that Springsteen fellow? His 80's releases were "The River","Nebraska","Born In The USA", and "Tunnel Of Love". Not too shabby.

But I am sure there are many that are. He's another one, when I hear his music, I change the station. Hard to please, I guess?

I'll grant that they sounded different, but that hair the outfits from when they first showed up were very much hair-metal.
