Marty is definitely the benchmark for HHS LB's and he might have been quick/fast enough in high school to dominant but not in college. Marty was an outstanding player for the Cats but the reason why he was the last pick in the draft and why he mainly played special teams was because of his speed. I will say this about him, I never seen a person with the ability to ALWAYS be around the ball, OUTSTANDING PLAYER. :ylsuper:

 

Your correct, but he would not have been a last round pick today as there were not as many rounds of the draft then. 8 years and a superbowl ring, and a fat NFL pension later, I would have to say his career went rather well. BTW, I was talking about his speed in hs and college. His speed was good enough in college to become a all conference player (1st team I believe) in the toughtest conference in college. He also got caught behind one of the best Lb's in the league in Willie McGinnest most of his career.:thumb:

The best thing about Marty wasn't talent, but the type of guy he is. You will not find a more humble and class person than Marty.

Also, Marty didnt have great speed, he had great instincts on the field meaning game speed.

Marty's speed would have been better now than it was at the time of his draft. With the new emphasis on speed training w/ Strength and Conditioning Coaches that would have been available to him I would guess that he would have done a bit better (though I don't know what his 40 yd. time was then). There is a whole cottage industry of programs that only focus on combine prep that he could have used to ready himself for the combine. 40 yd dash times across the board have dropped and that is not because the human speed genome has evolved but due to the science of speed and strength training.

He WAS the key! Mr. Fitzgerald...or "Maverick"...has elected to forgo college and try to gain acceptance into the Navy Seals. (a long time goal of his). Though there is no doubt that he could excel at the next level, academically and athletically, he has elected to go to an even more select level. Good luck, Sir! :thumb:
