March 23, 200818 yr I never said that racism wasn't a two way street. But just as you don't feel "white guilt", I don't think blacks should feel "black guilt". It is a free country, and just as you feel you can say whatever you want and it's no skin off your nose how it makes others feel, you should respect the fact that others have the same right, and they shouldn't care how you feel about it. Frankly, I share your lack of concern about what others feel about what I say. I suspect you already know that, though. I feel as strongly as you do about my positions. You are another BGPer that I have the utmost respect for, I think you know that. Jeremiah Wright went over the line IMO. He's attacking this country and he's spreading hatred and has been for years if you ask me. That's does zero good for anyone. He can disagree with policies all he wants, He can dislike politicians all wants, he can rail against certain things, but what he did is inexcusable to me.
March 23, 200818 yr As is the case, I strongly suspect, of many who villify the Rev Wright for his views.Could very well be. No one on this board is innocent. :creepy:
March 23, 200818 yr A lot of people use it because they think it offends people or scares people. It does not offend or scare me at all. It kind of makes me want to vote for him out of spite. :lol:Nothing personal as I mean no offense, but spite would be a really stupid reason to vote for a president. I know you're above that.
March 23, 200818 yr No, what's juvenile it that you or anyone is upset by it. I said long ago that the reason I type out his middle name is because of the whole Bill Cunningham thing, it was so over blown. Since then I've also typed out Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton and John Sidney McCain III but oddly enough, that didn't bother you. :sssh: It doesn't bother me one bit, but it doesn't change my opinion that it's sophomoric.
March 23, 200818 yr As is the case, I strongly suspect, of many who villify the Rev Wright for his views.Liberals seem to be experiencing great difficulty in coming to terms with the fact that Senator Barack Hussein Obama claims to have been mentored for 20 years by a racist Black Liberation Theologian. I base my opinion of public figures on their public statements. I do not need to listen to every public statement or read everything that David Duke has ever published to know enough about him to condemn him as a racist. I feel the same way about Jeremiah Wright. If somebody sells videos of himself making anti-American racist rants, it is entirely fair to conclude that such a person is a racist. It is also fair to assume that those in his congregation who cheered and applauded his racist sermons share his views. I look forward to the day when liberals and conservatives alike use the same criteria to identify racism on both extremes of the political spectrum and stop condemning racism only when it is politically expedient.
March 23, 200818 yr It doesn't bother me one bit, but it doesn't change my opinion that it's sophomoric.Really don't care, have I not made that clear. Still funny how you didn't bring it up then.

But what is wrong is to transfer the opinions of Rev Wright to Obama by association. I don't often agree with you...but I doubt anyone would hold anything you said against me just because we happen to be friends (or used to be if you've disowned me.)

You seem to have difficulty grasping that this is not a liberal vs. conservative issue. I feel it is fair to say that rational people do not condone what Rev Wright said in those sermons. However, I also feel it's fair to say, that rational people are willing to look at the whole context of the 20 years of sermons and delve into what other works he may have done before condemning him. I don't condemn racism only when it's politically expedient. I condemn all forms of discrimination and bias equally, on a daily basis.

You have to believe this isn't all news to Barack Hussein Obama and he's likely heard worse in private. What I wonder is how much Obama agrees with him in private.

A church does not select sermons for public consumption that are not reflective of the church's teachings. All of the video clips that are at issued were distributed by the church itself. Rev. Wright has not apologized for his offensive remarks and to my knowledge, Trinity United Church of Christ has not condemned the statements either. If Rev. Wright stands behind his remarks and his church stands behind him, is it really necessary to read the transcripts of 20 years of sermons to conclude that the man is a racist? I do not believe that it is.
March 23, 200818 yr I guess that if one is comfortable in judging a book by it's cover, and take things at face value, then by all means....don't delve any further into it. Personally, I've never been one of those people. I've always had a desire to know the whole story before I make my decision.

Come on...
March 23, 200818 yr :thumb: Black Liberation Theology is racism and that is what the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright claims to preach. As you said, the things that Rev. Wright says in his church and releases in videos to the public are probably less offensive than the things that he has said in private. I agree. The things people say in private are more often than not worse than what they dare to say publicly. Wright may be the exception----but I doubt it. The Black Liberation Theology that he promulgates in his church fuels racism. We still do have a problem with racism in this country and it is largely due to the fact that people like Wright and the media continue to make an issue of it and this serves only to incite and foster hatred among those who hear it.

If by "judging a book by its cover " you mean making a political judgment of a man based on multiple racist remarks and his refusal to admit his mistakes and refusal to apologize for them, then yes, I am very comfortable declaring such a man a racist.
