stickymitts Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 ...help a brother out. OK, I'm finally going to break down and get an LCD TV. As my wife states, I'm a bit of a tight...behind. So, I want to make sure I get a good TV but don't want to spend very much money. My "very much" money is probably a LOT less than your "very much" money. So, can you answer me some questions so I don't spend two hours at Best Buy? 1) Is a Vizio a decent brand? 2) I'm probably going with 720p because of price. Thoughts? 3) I'll pull the trigger on HD cable, eventually. Big deal? 4) How many HDMI inputs do I really need? Now and in the future? 5) I'm probably going with a Sony or something with a bit of a stronger name but if I can save a few bucks...I will. I'll get the biggest warranty, regardless of which TV I purchase.

He has standard air cable and it picked up the HD channels for free so...I would assume the picture would look better with Digital cable or satellite but it's pretty good picture for free HD. I on the other hand have an Olevia LCD 32" and I also like it. I have satellite HD on it, and it's pretty nice picture for the price. I recommend going to http://www.AVSforum.com and searching the forums, they have customer reviews, and other helpful info.

halfback20 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 BTW, I have a 32" Westinghouse LCD HDTV and I love it. Like I said about a Vizio, it isn't as nice as a Samsung, and the picture isn't as clear, but it's great. I have DISH HD and I use the regular HD component cables instead of the expensive HDMI and the picture is still 100X better than standard definition.

Just don't fall for the 1080p crap. Only blu ray and HD DVD's are in 1080p, so at this point having a 1080p tv is unnecessary. 3.) The HDMI gives you the best picture. But you can get a very good HD picture with the Red/Blue/Green HD Component cables. And you can get them for under $10. 4.) I only have 1 HDMI input, and I don't use it. I plan on using it if I get a ps3, or a bluray dvd player. 5.) I would go with Samsung if I could afford it. Compared to the rest they are the best IMO...

But if you are wanting the best of the best, you should go for Samsung. They are clearly much better when compared next to one another. Samsungs are much more expensive though too.

You can get anything cheap, you just have to know where to find them. I like my component cables just fine for now though.
hokiefromky Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 1) I've never owned a Vizio, but they seem to have a decent picture. 2) When you buy a 32" or smaller TV, there really is no difference between 720 and 1080. The larger screens have a tiny difference, but its not worth the extra $$$ in my opinion. However, I'd think that 5 years down the road, everything will be 1080 or better. 3) Most local stations across the country broadcast in HD. So long as you are within 30 miles from the transmission tower, you should have a decent local picture. 4) Again, in 5 years, most everything will probably be HDMI. Count everything you typically hook up to a TV, and figure out how many you need. Include cable box, Blue-Ray Player, computer input, etc. 5) I have a Samsung 50" 720p projection TV. I didn't really want 720p or projection, but the price tag made it well worth it. I am very happy with the quality of the Samsung. One major thing to look for - watch how the TV projects a black object. Most LCD's have a problem with portraying black. They seem washed out or a dark grey. If the TV can project a black object well, you've got a good quality TV.
