Why wouldn't COACH JASON SMITH get the job? Please call him by his name and not his high school nickname. He has earned more respect than that. His qualifications from the last 2 years would out-shine any souped-up resume that would come across the principal's desk. Sometimes handling extreme adversity makes a candidate more qualified than wins and losses. Which he has more wins in half a year than Coach Dodd this whole year.

 

And also only has 1 less win in district competition than Fraley in 5 years.

Couldnt the same be said for Coach Sutton also?, I mean last year was when they won most of the games you are refering too, and that was the year that Sutton was splitting duties with Coach Smith aka Popeye.

Outsider looking in here, but Greenup Co Basketball job sounds like it would be a big headache...I hope they get someone good.

4-2 last year? What does that even mean?, Did he only coach 6 games? i dont understand what your trying to prove with this post. So it sounds like to me Sutton should apply because he has the same record as Smith, and you say Smith is the man. P.S. What does Lewis Co. hve to do with anything. If beating LC is the major accompishment of your coaching career, then your resume isnt that impressive.

It's not the coaches (Smith and Sutton) that are there thats so much the problem, it's the whole system. I've heard for so long: We Care About The Kids, It's All About The Students, Learning for One and All, whatever slogan you want to put on it the GC school's are not delivering on the academic or athletic end. Hiring practices there have been miserable for quite sometime and this current fiasco that happened and inpending lawsuit that is coming down the pike with former coach Jim Hicks, is just another example of the problems.

 

As a lifelong resident of GC and a former student I can say that the system as a whole has went downhill in the last 10 years or so. Why don't the administrators do what is right and hire the person with the passion for bringing back GC to where it belongs in the 16th Region. Don't hire a person who is just some glory hound who seeking attention, an aging coach trying to find a spot between jobs, and/or a coach who has no attentions of doing what’s best for the kids, but continues to be a pawn in the political corruption of GC. I'm to the point now in my life that I believe this is the last chance GC has to right the ship and bring back the program to where it belongs, or it will be gone forever and will become one of the doormats of not only the 63rd District, but one of the lower tier teams of the 16th Region.

Sorry no need to take a breath when you've come to the point most people who have witnessed this debacle. I sometimes wished that I could just close out my feelings on this subject, but I can't. It pains me that 20 years of endless dedication by a head coach, his tireless staff over those years, and gut busting players has gone to waste due the selfishness of a select group of people.

It's not the fact that he is gone and believe me that is the best for him. It's the fact that the work he and the others put in is long since been wasted. I care about the kids at GC and thats the bottomline, but it seems no one else truly cares or they would've taken care of this mess a long time ago.

Fact: Ward isn't coming back. Great coach, great success, but it just isn't in the cards people.

Fact2:Greenup is in a rut and they haven't pulled the trigger on the right guy yet to coach that team. Not saying they've hired bad coaches, just bad fits.

Until they find the right person for the job, it will be, as Steven Tyler sang, "Same old story, same old song and dance."

Coupon, Coach Smith was 4-2 in 06-07 and 4-11 in 07-08...that's 8-13 overall, which considering that he basically took over in the middle of a year, twice, with barely implementing any of his system, also without the benefit of a pre-season to prepare a team for the season, I'd say he's over-achieved considering the pressure and adversity that Greenup County basketball has been under...I'd doubt if anyone could have handle these circumstances with any greater success....Makes sense to give him the program and remove the Interim tag, and let him see what he can do with an entire season and under "NORMAL" circumstances...

 

Second, Coach Smith coached GC to a 29 point win vs. Lewis Co. in the regular season in 06-07...Coach Sutton led the Muskies to a 14 point defeat against that same Lewis Co. bunch in the first round of the district about a month later...numbers don't lie....per KHSAA website.

 

Third...all this talk of Coach Dodd is amazing...sure he has a nice resume (so did Jim Hicks and Chad Leach), but why is he no longer at Russell? Does Greenup Co. want Russell's cast-aways...seems he doesn't have a great track record "building programs" and that is not what GC needs with all it's young talent coming up. If it wasn't for the transfers of Vanhoose, Blair, and Austin ??? He hasn't developed one decent class of Russell kids...just my thoughts.

 

Again...why would GC not give Coach Smith the opportunity? He's a GC guy who has been there through thick and thin and will continue to do so (Going outside the last three times: Cooksey, Hicks, and Leach hasn't panned out to well, has it?). Just think, it's been 8 years since Coach Ward left and they have gone through 3 coaches. Don't you think it's a good idea to give it to a Greenup County guy? It would be a shame to loose Coach Smith as a coach and a teacher if he decides to persue other opportunities.

I agree it needs to go to a GC guy, just not Smith. It should belong to Fraley as he sould've been the heir apparent to Ward, but could not be chosen do to political nonsense (Fraley was a staunch supporter and still is of his mentor Coach Ward), thus enter Cooksey. Though I think Hicks is a good coach, I feel if Fraley would've been chosen in the 2000-01 season to coach he would have been very successful and the Musketeer Prgram would've continued its proud tradition and would have never sunk to the level it has.

Just in reference to the 29 pt. Smith win in the regular season and the Sutton 14 pt. win in the 1st round of the district: Don't you think Mr. March's team probably played a little better and with everything to lose in the district?

Just that Sutton could get that game with the "pressure" and "circumstances" should speak volumes about his coaching abilities. He's underrated in this conversation as far as I'm concerned, although I do think Smith or Fraley would seem to be a good choice at GCHS.
