Morgan Co. 33 Russell 31 / 16th Region 1st round

Featured Replies

Anybody have shooting percentages? Just wondering how both teams scored so few points. Sounded like a tough way to lose for the lady devils. Congrats to Morgan Co. Gotta win the close ones like that.

Congrats to both teams....Samantha Sparks is a warrior...who else would you want shooting those free throws? Tough ending although she and Holmes had great careers. Good luck to Morgan-it appears they will need it.

Felt really bad for Samantha tonight. Toughest of all situations and then add the drama surrounding it with the officials taking their sweet time to determine if time should be put back on the clock and the other junk going on. Then the Morgan Co fans running the length of the floor trying to get in the background before Sparks had to shoot and Keith Kappes running them off. It must have taken a good 5 minutes after the foul occurred that she finally got to shoot. No wonder she missed the free throws. Samantha is a GREAT kid and I agree with Dad, she has nothing to be ashamed of and should hold her head high!

With that said, congrats to Coach Brown. A great guy who has turned the Morgan Co program around in a very short period of time.

Go, I thought time should be put back , what do you think? Also I have never seen fans allowed to do that, probably close to one hundred fans running the full length of the court ? I felt a warning should have been issued, and fans returned to their seats.

I am not sure about the time? It was very close, maybe a few tenths of a second, but I really don't know. As far as the fans running the length to get behind the backboard: poor judgement, but most of them were students just trying to help their team. I though Keith Kappes and the tournament staff acted quickly and appropriately. They moved the fans out of the way and I think a stern warning was given during a meeting in the second game. It was bad for Sam, but I am not sure anything else could have been done, with the exception of time being put back up. It was so close though, that would have been a tough call as to how much time should have been put back up.

Nice job on the games (by the way). There looked to be about 1 sec. left on the clock but it's hard to say. But if they put time back ,Sam would have had company on the line and may have been easier for her ?

Thanks for the kind words and it sure may have helped if there were others on the line. Tough situation, I sure wouldn't want have been there!!!!

At this point I don't think it really matters ! We have seen enough to pretty much know who is going to state!

Heartbreaker for the Lady Devils tonight! Great effort by Pookie Sparks and Kat Holmes in their last game in maroon and white (on the court anyway)! Keep your heads up ladies' date=' you left it all on the court! Pook - there was noone in the gym who I would have rather had shooting those free throws!!! You have always been, and still are, one of the all time clutch performers in both basketball and softball, [b']to ever put on a Lady Devil uniform[/b]...I look forward to watching you crush the ball this spring! Kat, it's been a hard road for you with injuries all throughout your career, but you hung in there and contributed in so many ways to this team. You are a fine young lady with great character and heart!! I consider my daughter blessed to have played with two awesome kids and two great teammates! You will be dearly missed next year!!!

Just curious, she must have big numbers for you to claim she is one of the best ever.

I think if you read the post again it was said that she was one of the all time CLUTCH performers. Nothing was said that she was one of the best ever. Although she very well may be, I am not a Russell girls basketball historian by any stretch. I do remember one clutch shot she made in the regional tournament against West Carter (I believe it was in 2005).

I hate the ending for Samantha Sparks. She is a classy young lady and comes from a Class family that I personally have tremendous respect for. She has nothing to hang her head about- she left it all on the court. Congrats to the Lady Devils on a hard fought season and to Morgan County for moving on!

I saw a level of intensity from Eagle tonight that I didn't see in our regular season matchup. She is a special player and the most athletic girl in the region by far! Not to mention that sweet jumper. We just couldn't capitalize when she was on the bench with foul trouble! Has to be a gym rat and/or play against the boys often!!![/quote]

Or against her dad Jerry. Remember when he played ball for Morgan Co.

I am not stating anything bad about the kid, I havent watched her play and you are correct on your post about being CLUTCH. Having said that, how many clutch baskets has she made in her career?

I guess that depends on your definition of clutch and also your definition of career.
