Saturday am.

It was fairly close for the first period. Bryan Station missed a lot lot of shots and several free throws early. Scott made a nice run to finish the first and close it to 4.

 

Then as BellAlum said, BS got to hitting their shots in the 2nd. Basically SC lead by about 10-12 points the 2nd half. SC made a little run and had closed it to 9. But Coach Hicks got a technical with 7 seconds to go in the half. Mack made 2 free throws. BS got the ball back, and Mack drained an unbelievable 3 pointer with a hand in his face at the buzzer.

 

Third period, BS had put it away about 4 minutes in. Got up by 20, and that is basically where the margin stayed.

 

Coach Hicks technical killed any chance of SC making a comeback. (guess he has a couple of loose screws!) That 5 point turn around at the end of the 2nd was a killer for the SC kids.

 

If BS can play like this for 7 more games, they will be state champs. To me BS is as good this year, as SC was last year. They are quick, strong, and relentless. They can drive it inside or hit threes with reckless abandon. Miss a shot or make a turnover, and they are pushing the ball down the court so quick, it makes your head spin. The other teams play back on their heels most of the game. But I also think BS is vulnerable, especially if they have a bad shooting night, considering they are relatively small inside.

 

Mack is one of the best players I have seen in person in a long time. He just does so much. Strong, and fundamentally skilled. He is like an assassin out there. Takes his time, waits for the opening. You may get him to make a turnover or two a game, but he doesn't try to make up for it immediately. He waits until the moment is right. It is hard to believe that UK or UL didn't recruit this kid more. I have seen him play since 7th grade. I always thought he was a good mid-major college prospect. But this year, he has taken it to another level. Butler got a steal in Mack. He'd get my vote for Mr Basketball this year.

 

Can't wait to next week and watch the 11th region tournament. What a bunch of great teams. Scott County, Bryan Station, Lex Cath, Dunbar, Franklin Co, Madison Central. (I feel for Model and Western Hills). What district winner is going to want to have to play Dunbar or Scott County? Doesn't seem like much of a "benefit" for winning your district. But that is just how good the 11th is.

 

Money says, Bryan Station or Catholic from the 11th. But I think Dunbar and Scott County (and maybe Madison Central) could have a shot, if they get a good draw.

It was a dumb technical to get. I know he was upset with some of the push offs from Mack and others, but it was a terrible time to lose your cool. It was definitely not Coach Hicks best coached game.

 

SC didn't get the ball to Phares very much, but Station was covering him up pretty good. You have to make someone else beat you, and Station did that.

 

Like I said, I really want to see some percentages from the game for Station and for Mack.

Yes, I thought the refs let both teams get away with a lot. SC pushed off a lot bringing the ball down. BS held onto jerseys a lot. I was sitting on the first row at mid-court. Both teams were huge and strong. Very physical game.

 

I too thought SC should have gotten the ball into Phares more. I don't think BS could have stopped him. I thought he could have scored 40 on BS. Phares has improved tremendously this year. He would be in my top 5 for Mr Basketball next year.

 

Scott will be very dangerous in the 11th, even though they lost. If they get a good draw (ie. NOT Lex-Cath), then could easily get to the region finals. Then who knows? Maybe a rematch with Station.

Congrats to both teams on their seasons. Again it is a shame that only one team can get out of the 11th. I think the KHSAA needs to redraw the districts and regions again.

Bottom Line is if SC can get the ball to Phares (in scoring position) they will be hard to beat, I haven't been sold on the fact that any SC guard can create on their own, that doesnt work well with Hicks' System. Lets hope they can start clicking again like they tend to do around tournament time!

Wow, Bryan Station played at such a high level tonight. A little slow to start, but they got going in the second period.

 

Scott seemed to get tired in the second, and that is when Bryan station got a double digit lead. Station plays with such intensity the entire game. I don't think Mack left the game until a minute or so left. I wish he were going to UK.

 

The Gym was packed, and a great tournament atmosphere. Bryan Station had a great student section. And Scott County had half the gym packed.

 

My congratulations to Station on winning a tough district. Only gets tougher next week.

Cybersports cut out with 5:30 left in 3rd, SC down 20, SC was shooting 62% from the field 50% from the line, Station was 56% from the field and 50% from the free throw line, SC Guards had already had 11 + combined turnovers....not sure how correct this was, expecially since the stats were not over a complete game.

I didn't think SC shot that high of a percentage, but they did get a lot of inside shots with Guyn and Phares.

Those percentages may have been off, looks as if cybersports for that game is messed up.

Channel 18 sports showed a blocked shot by a Bryan Station player on Pharris from Scott County that was :scared::eek:. Had to be a crowd pleaser. Looked good on the highlights.

If Shelvin Mack does not win Mr. Basketball, those who did not vote for him have obviously not watched him play. It's that simple, he is the best basketball player in the state, period. He played out of his mind tonight. HSBBallFan78 said a lot of what I wanted to say, but he is incredible to watch. He missed his first couple of three's and started to penetrate and dish more often. Once his shot came back he began to knock them down. His basketball IQ is off the charts, he sees the floor so well, he knows where everyone is on the court and where they are going. He plays defense, he pushes the ball up the floor, he rebounds, he leads his team. Miller and Hobson may be better talents or prospects, and I've seen them play, but Shelvin Mack is the best basketball player in the state.

 

His line tonight: 32 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals.

 

The scary part is that he wasn't the leading scorer for Station. Dacoby Burnett had 35. At one point I told someone Station may be one of the most dangerously offensive teams I've ever seen. Few times can combine the athletic, run-and-gun ability that Station has with their uncanny shooting. Mack, Burnett, and Morones can all drain shots from outside when they're on. No one beats this team if they play near as good as they did tonight. They will give up points inside, but there isn't a good enough post player to defeat Station himself, and the Defenders don't seem to mind giving up some points inside because they know they are going to get turnovers and will score a lot themselves.

 

With a packed house and the defending state champs visiting, I worried that Mack's supporting cast might not be ready for this kind of pressure game. Obviously, they were. Not a good sign for the rest of the 11th Region.

I just want to say the 11th region is sick with talent and about the top six to eight teams could win a lot of regions in the state.
