cooperstown Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 29-24 St. H lead at halftime. In 3rd quarter Conner went on an impressive 15-5 run to take a 5 point lead and looked as though they might pull away. St. H. then had their own 8-0 run to close the quarter. 4th quarter was exciting, back and forth scoring with St. H. generally maintaining a 2 pt. lead until about 2 minutes to go when they pushed it to 4 and then 6 and Conner never really mounted a serious comeback threat at the end. Pugh for Conner had a terrific game. I'd probably give him player of the game even in the loss. St. H's guards (#14 and #15, sorry I know one is Speed, but forget the other's name) were very solid, as was #4. All 3 hit some big three's late in the game. Didn't think St. H. played as solid as they did Wednesday night against Ryle, but looked tough nonetheless. They are a very fundamentally sound team. All they really lack is a true big man underneath. Congrats to both teams.

You'd kind of like to start the Regional tourney letting some other team take on the tough teams and hope for a freakish upset. Sure, now you have to play the team that beat the tough team, but maybe you still have a better chance against them then you might against the original tough team. This team perhaps may not be consistent and you have a better chance of getting by them. Eventually your luck will run out, but it might extend your season a bit and allow you to sneak into the Regoional Finals. Doesn't always work out, but if you really aren't the best, there's still always chances for the freakish to happen.

And occasionally, a better - or even the best - team will get beat by a lesser team along the way (it's called an upset). If St. Henry draws Villa or Bellevue those both pretty much locks for a win and then they will get Holmes, CCH, Highlands, or Dixie in the Semifinals. If they draw CovCath, then they could have Highlands or Dixie waiting for them in the Semifinals because they got a good draw. You definetly want the easier team in the first round so you dont have to defeat 3 really good teams to win it, you only have to play 2 of the favorites. Does this makes sense?
