Best Way to Break In a Baseball Glove

Featured Replies

One other thing, for God's sake don't let anyone else put their hand in your glove. Would you let them wear your underwear?

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Why people don't understand this, I don't know.

And why everybody wants to try on my glove, for no good reason, is beyond me. Especially when I'm a lefty and they're not!

Play catch with a weighted ball. It will build up your arm as well. One catch with the heavy ball is worth 20 from a regular ball.

No way. I have seen guys hurt their arms throwing with weighted or waterlogged balls. If you are throwing underhand or just light tossing, maybe, but dont make a real throw.

No doubt. I had to hide my glove all year to keep people from putting it on.

Where can you get any sandle soap? And when you say oil, what kind do you mean? I have a glove that I have had for about 2 years I think and is used frequently, but the fingers are still a little too stiff for my likeing.

You can usually find it at tack shops, shoe repair shops and some shoe stores. You may even be able to find it in some sporting goods stores.

Use saddle soap or some lanolin-based product (shaving cream), but sparingly. Be careful using petrolium based glove conditioners (they can make it so sticky so that it attracts dirt), as well as using neatsfoot or mink oil (they can make your glove too heavy). Lexol leather conditioner is a good product, as it's not as strong. Too much of any product will weaken the laces prematurely. But the simple fact of the matter, as has already been stated here, is that there is no quick fix to breaking in a glove and the best method is just from regular use.

They make baseball glove oil that is good. The best thing I ever did was to oil it up, stick a baseball in it then wrap it tight in a towel for the night. Go out and play catch the next day and continue that process until it suites your liking.

Steve Hamilton was a gem! He told some of the best stories I have ever heard. It's not everyday you get to talk with a fun guy that played with guys like Mickey Mantle!

Regarding my trivia question about Coach Hamilton. He played both MLB and professional Basketball. Not many athletes, can say that.

Shaving cream will work, but make sure it has aloe in it. Once you hit it with the shaving cream get out and toss with it and work with it until it is ho you like it. You may have to tighten some strings, but it's worth the effort once it's the way you want it.

And make sure you remove the shaving cream before you start playing catch & throw. :D

We throw one almost every day in practice. Not a shotput, 11 or 12 oz.

Throwing a weighted ball is something that's still up in the air in the medical world. You'll have some that say no way and others say that it hasn't been proven to do any damage. It's one of the rare things that are still up in the air in the medical world.

True, I wouldn't recomend it to a 3 year old, or first time player, but I believe in them if used correctly. Iv'e had success over the last 5 years with a weighted ball. In 3 times throwing my 12 year old broke in her glove using one. A good topic for a thread.
