I saw some practice yesterday, and I can say that a strong mentality is being built at Southern. Attention is being paid to the little things. Kids run everywhere, helmets don't come off, and players are now responsible for everything they do. Coach Brumley is going about this the right way. I heard him tell the kids that the locker room is their home and its THEIR responsibility to take pride and clean it up after every practice. He has a lot of new kids who haven't played so practice is modified down, but I believe that things are in the right direction. Brumley has some nice players with Rico Brown, Devon Johnson, and Mike Mullins. The mentality that I've seen reminds me a lot of the MIke Elkin days, and I believe that with some time the results are going to be their, the kids look like they are learning to compete more than anything, and that in itself can win you ballgames...Good luck to Coach Brumley and his staff, we are excited for the upcoming season...GO EAGLES

Be honest, can Southern break the Rockcastle jinx. Two new head coaches and Southern has never won. Where will the game be played this year.

I do believe there is enough talent to beat Rockcastle, and there has been several times where Southern had more talent than Rockcastle, but the problem is that the support for Southern and Rockcastle are totally different. Mount Vernon supports that team in everything they do. Parents tell there kids they will win, and then tell everybody else they will win. That is the difference, Rockcastle beat Southern those first few years and parents etc. believed that Southern couldn't beat Rockcastle. Many parents of both schools work with each other and the parent from Rockcastle tell them they are going to get beat and it gets back to the players and they believe that stuff. Its an intimidation factor that Rockcastle has over Southern, not talent, not coaches, not facilities, Southern has to find that "FRAME OF MIND" to play against the Rockets, and until that happens Rockcastle will continue to win. There has never been a huge difference in players, only in the mind...Southern will find that and when and only when they find that will they beat Rockcastle.

Hasnt he been on staff for 4 or so years? I think he may have been at Holmes or some other school up north. He's a Boone county grad, that played with Shaun Alexander, if I'm not mistaken.

I would think being told a team was going to beat you would make you try harder and not intimidate you to the extent that you keep losing to the same team year after year. I guess it works funny though.

Also the facilities are not any better at Southern, at least we have bleachers on the visitor side that you can see from. Plus our coaches are a big difference, they always had us prepared and ready to play, so if players are the same then something is wrong with Southern. Other than Teddy Taylor, I believe strongly that Southern has had good coaches, but it goes to the fact like I stated earlier about "INTIMIDATION." Southern is like that "dog that gets beat over and over" until one day the dog decides he's had enough and finally bites back. Southern had Mt. Vernon beat in 1996 and 1997 but just didn't finish in the clutch. Southern played Mt. Vernon really tough last year until the 4th quarter because simply the kids allowed them to run over them. When I played at Southern in the mid 90's we were tough minded but could never get over that hump of "the rock." We beat an outstanding Corbin team that year (1996) and got beat with 30 seconds left in the regional finals to Boyle. The mindset in Mt. Vernon is totally different with the whole community expecting to win. So you are right about the parents...they shouldn't come if they feel that way, but until the outside community of Berea support Madison Southern all the way Mt. Vernon will will. But I believe in my heart that the kids and staff at Southern want and will beat "The Rock" very soon.

In Response to the seating at the Rock. I don't think how good the seats are is as important as the winning record they have at the Rock. There are very few teams with a home record that can touch the Rock. I have stood on the banks of the Rocks football field and watched the wins roll in for decades. As far as beating the Rock very soon, the Rock is an elite program that has took many years of hard work to build. Madison Southern has a lot more building to do. I hope M.S. becomes a better program and the rivalry can be good one day, instead of so lop-sided like it is now.

These kids have been lifting since the 1st of November, I will say this these kids have never worked as hard as they are working right now. Coach Brumley has made sure that they won't be out worked. More and more kids are buying into this program which is great to see, and these kids are being held accountable for everything they do. Madison Southern got it right with there new coach, and I hope it shows in the win loss column.

Word is WKU has shown a lot of interest in RB/WR Rico Brown, he will be a Junior this coming up fall, and looks to help an improving Eagle squad.

Well I know for a fact having graduated from Southern, and knowing many of the players and coaches, that this has been the toughest off-season work of ANY team at Southern. These kids have lifted Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and do agility work on Tuesday and Thursday. There have been about 35+ kids there everyday. Southern is not really big, but I promise that they will be fast. Coach Brumley and his staff have worked hard ever since coach Carter resigned and that had been since the first of November, Coach Brumley was working with the kids way before he was hired as head coach. His dedication and hard work will pay off. It may not show in the win loss column this year, but in time look for Madison Southern to begin to roll. The kids are buying in to his work ethic, and I am seeing things that never took place even when Coach Elkin was there. The players like coach Brumley a lot. And his staff are all under 30 with a few having played college sports and knowing what it takes to win. Look for good things out of this program in the coming years.
