Do you like the district tournament format?

Featured Replies

Most regions only have 16 teams or less, there are only a few 5 team districts left in the state, if more than 16 you could have a play in game like the ncaa does with the bottom 2 teams. As far as regular season games being tied up, looking at some of the schedules on the khsaa, most teams play 10-12 games against their region anyway. So your only adding a few opponents. Ive heard talk that teams are going to be encouraged to play closer to home next year because of gas prices and othr financial problems.

Most teams play their district opponents twice during regular season, by playing them once, you can add other teams in those dates. Two holiday tournaments can get you an extra 8 games counting as two, that leaves 6 dates to play competition outside your region. Total count would be 15 regional games and 14 games outside the region, if you traveled for your holiday tourneys.

No member school shall play more than twenty-three (23)

basketball games during the regular season. A maximum of

two (2) tournaments may be included in any manner other than

counting each game played against the limit of twenty-three

(23) games. Any two tournaments played during the regular

season may be counted as one game per tournament against

the limit of twenty-three (23) provided that neither tournament

necessitates the team playing more than four (4) games. Any

game played over the limit of four in any one tournament shall

be counted against the limit of twenty-three (23) games.

Except in your scenario, the season limitation is only 23 games.

Plus, your scenario would limit A schools to scheduling to play in the Class A tournament and that is it. As the regional A counts as one of the tournament wavers and if they make it to the state A, then that one counts as the second tournament.

Then, like my school, if a neighboring county that you traditionally don't play, you would have to look at dropping them from the schedule.

Then, you have schools like Brossart, Campbell, Scott, Calvary, Silver Grove, who are in the 10th region because they were moved there by the KHSAA but still participate in the NKAC because they are a NKY school. They wouldn't be able to continue participating in that as they have a 6-8 game commitment against NKY foes that are not in their region.

Add in the fact, that many schools travel to several tournaments throughout the state to get their players recognized for all-state and recruiting purposes and you have just seriously hampered that.

Very good try and idea but it has some serious limitations and issues.

This is a moot point, because nothing is going to change anyway, no matter what idea or scenario anyone poses. It seems like on all discussions about changes its about All A schools, why do they get an opportunity to play in 2 state tournaments and no one else does? There are some regions especially in the east that the same (A) school goes to both tournaments in the same year and on occasion an A school wins the sweet 16 as evident last year. I feel in an effort to not appear biased against small schools, we have allowed them to have additional benefits and exposure. What about the 2A schools who barely missed the cutoff, should we have a tourney for the almost All A. I feel everyone should have a tournament in their class or no one should.

Very well said.....I wrote that on another post about the All A.

All districts should be seeded. Region is OK as is.

Why not have the mid-season Class tourney for each class as the A class has now? Because no has stepped up and organized it like the Class A founders. The KHSAA didn't organize the All-A. I wouldn't wait for them to organize the others either, if the tournaments are wanted.

Do away with the all "A"! lets say for instance that Clinton Co. wins the all "A" and then they win the sweet 16, I don't think its fair for the other schools to only get one chance at a state tournament title rather than the all A schools getting a chance to win two state titles.

Because the All A schools banded together and started their own tournament. The KHSAA DID NOT start the All A classic.

If you want a state tournament for your 2A schools have them band together and form one exactly how the 1A schools did.

Or petition the KHSAA to go to a class system.

Regional seeding would be a disaster, especially asking coaches to vote. They have too much to gain and lose to trust them to vote at that point.

I agree. District seeding works (at least in our district) because we play one another twice during the season. But regional seeding wouldn't work because a vote would have to determine the pairings.

Thank you. Some people just don't get it that the KHSAA has nothing to do with the All A. It is a lot of hard working volunteers that put this together.

I understand the set up. It isn't sanctioned by the KHSAA. It would be nice for the middle sized schools to do so though. Or go to a class system state wide as they do in the other KHSAA sports. I still say 3 or 4 "Final Fours" will bring in more money than 1 final four. However, it is tradition that would have to be messed with. Some in Indiana love the new set up of classes, traditionalists hate it!
