Oscars

Featured Replies

I agree that they're losing their luster but I would say that I definitely repect the Oscars more than the others. They usually get the job done right except for a few little arguments I've had with them in the past but nothing too major.

I think the final straw for me was when Al Gore won an Academy Award.

Since we're talking about Oscars, here are my biggest disagreements with the winners over the years:

1941--"How Green Was My Valley" won over "Citizen Kane", "The Maltese Falcon", and "Sergeant York"....all better films, and have proven so over time.

1952--"The Greatest Show On Earth" has not held up over the years. It beat out a much better film, and a classic, in "High Noon", which has stood the test of time (which, btw, was an importantant theme in the movie).

1956--"Around The World in Eighty Days". Another movie that has not stood up well as the years roll by. The award should have gone to "The Ten Commandments".

1963--"Tom Jones". Who has even seen this movie? Award should had gone to "Lillies Of the Field", which won Sydney Poitier an Oscar for Best Actor.

1980--"Ordinary People". Not a bad movie but "Raging Bull" was better.

1981--"Chariots Of Fire". I remember watching the awards that night and everyone in the audience was shocked when it was announced as Best Picture. "On Golden Pond", which won Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda Best Acting Oscars, should have won. It did have a nice sound track, though.

1982--I still can't understand how in the world one of the all-time yawners in movie history, "Gandhi", can beat out "E.T.The Extra-Terrestrial". Don't get me wrong, it had a good theme and message...it was just boring.

1987--"The Last Emperor". Another boring movie that won simply for lack of competition that year. Long, confusing, and

1998--Maybe the greatest injustice since Citizen Kane was snubbed in 1941. "Shakespeare In Love" beat out "Saving Private Ryan" as Best Picture. All I can say is "WOW!!! Politics and money, and Spielberg refused to play that game....and it sadly cost him the Best Picture.

I think Russell Crowe got screwed for lead actor in '01. He was nominated 3 years in a row which is pretty darn impressive, won the 2nd year and should have won over Denzel the 3rd year. I also think Scorsese has really gotten the short end of the stick over the years as well.

I'm still waiting on Johnny Depp to win. I think he was shorted for the original Pirates movie. His performance was definitely better than Sean Penn's.

Agree on all accounts.

I can live with that one but I would probably lean towards Depp as well.

Johnny Depp is my favorite actor but did he really have enough of the movie focused on him to be a Best Actor? There were so many other subplots that, while he did a great job, I'm not sure if he could have earned it.

Also I was looking something up and I saw somewhere that Gangs of New York was nominated for 10 awards in 2002 and won zero. That's too bad.

Another botch job I think was Whitaker winning lead actor last year. Don't get me wrong, I think he did an amazing job but I don't see how you don't give that one to Will Smith. I would have even given it to DiCaprio over him. Whitaker wasn't even the leading actor in the movie!!!!

I also think Polanski winning best director over Scorsese that year is a complete joke. The Pianist was a good movie with a good story, but it could have been 10 times better imo. I also feel the same way about Hotel Rwanda...

I don't know. If you replace Johnny Depp with another good actor in Pirates, you won't find that performance and that movie would have flopped...badly. Other than Depp's performance it was a poor movie. I think you could have interchanged Sean Penn in Mystic River with another good actor and found another good performance.

"No Country For Old Men" is a great movie. I haven't seen "There Will Be Blood" yet, but I'd like to.

If you haven't seen "No Country for Old Men", watch it TODAY! lol If it is out in theater's anywhere around you that is.

Agreed, and I think Eddie Murphy should have won Best Supporting Actor over Alan Arkin.

I never saw Dreamgirls so I can't say but I definitely would have given it to Hounsou over him.

I will throw in a few more:

1979-"Kramer Vs. Kramer" was the winner. Should have been "Apocalypse Now".

1990-Give me "Goodfellas" over "Dances With Wolves".

1994-I will carch some heat here. Winner was "Forrest Gump". My vote goes to "Pulp Fiction".

Personally I like Pulp Fiction better than Forrest Gump but I think they made the right choice.
