It was not uncommon for towns to stage public hangings in frontier towns but I do not believe that it was a common practice for towns to ban or confiscate guns. If such a practice were common, then I would expect that there would be a landmark Supreme Court decision on the matter and I have never heard one cited by gun control zealots.

When Obama was sworn into the senate did he use a Bible to place his left hand on ? You need to check this one ! To me it is not just the right to bear arms, but their thoughts on this issue tell me how they think, period ! If their judgement is so impaired and twisted on this one they don't have the thought process necessary to make good leaders.

So far, you have given one example of a town that banned guns (although only in a portion of town), Dodge City. You said that the practice was common. The example in your second link mentioned that many people in the Old West advocated banning guns, but no specific examples of local governments successfully doing so. (A "Texas cattle raising association" ban of six-shooters is hardly the same as a government entity banning them.)

 

So far, your claim that gun bans in Old West towns was common seems like a case of all hat and no cattle.

 

As for slaves and free African-Americans not being allowed the full rights of citizenship of white Americans, the outcome of the Civil War and subsequent Supreme Court decisions renders your point moot.

 

Allowing local jurisdictions to selectively deprive American citizens of any of our constitutional rights would start this nation down a slippery slope. Obama is absolutely wrong to support gun bans in DC. As a lawyer, he should no better.
