KHSAA board blasts LCA for improper aid to athletes

Lexington Christian Academy representatives got an earful of criticism from some Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control members on Monday.

 

It was the first time LCA appeared before the board since the school was fined and put on probation for giving improper financial assistance to student-athletes.

And people question why there is such an outcry against the private schools.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in comparing what LCA did to what Woodford County did a year or two ago in girl's soccer (I think??) is flabbergasting.

 

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Woodford County self-reported that they "inadvertently" played one two many regular season games.

 

Their penalty from the KHSAA? Banishment from post-season play for that year. The entire team, school, coaching staff, parents, supporters, fans, etc., were forbidden to participate in post-season play.

 

LCA is caught red-handed, not self-reported, offering illegal monetary inducements to student/athletes and NO PLAYER IS RULED INELIGIBLE, POST-SEASON SANCTIONS ARE NOT MANDATED?????

 

Where is the equity in the rulings handed down by the KHSAA?

Do you feel you were treated fairly, particularly after the LCA rulings fiasco?

IMO, if a school is caught recruiting. All sports programs from that school should be banned from post-season play for a year. A high school is a small enough institution and the administration should be aware of what is going on.

I don't know all the details, but if LCA is giving priority to athletes when they are giving their scholarships, they should be investigated and sanctioned.

There is nothing to play out. That is part of the reason many are upset over such a light punishment. A $1,000 fine for each violation and over $10,000 reimbursement to KHSAA for investigative fees and you just play on.

I do apologize. It shouldn't have said recruiting. I meant to say overpaying athletes to attend the school.

The bolded is the only part that is not accurate. WC played one game over the limit due to a miscalculation of how regular season tournament games counted toward the total number of games allowed to be played. Was a shame for all involved.

 

A question. Who compared the LCA situation to what happened to WC?

NONE. i repeat no proof of ANY type of recruiting was found. it was simply money that a Baptist church donated to african-american students to encourage a Christian education. most of these students have attended LCA prior to high school and the school it self had no control to which students this money was given. and 3/4 of the students that this money was given to were athletes. but consider that LCA has an enrollment of 400 student, 80%+ of which are athletes. This is a violation of KHSAA rules. however this is NOT recruiting and the punishment IMO was fit.

 

Refer to my earlier post, is the punishment meted out to Woodford Co. fFor a self-reported violation of playing one too many soccer games an equitable punishment when compared with the punishment handed down to LCA?

 

I know that the current Commissioner is a graduate of Lexington Catholic and I am not saying that she is more lenient toward private schools, but the IMPRESSION after these two rulings is, at the very least, eye-brow raising.

There will be more backlash.

People and members are not just angry with LCA but also at the punishment.
