When players shoot 100% from the floor and free throw line, never make a turnover and a coach never raises his voice about anything, then you can complain about the officiating all you want. The point being no one is is ever perfect. I have never seen an official change a pivot foot, travel, miss a free throw or a short arm a wide open break away layup in any game. I have never seen an official ask a coach why did you stay in zone about three possesions too many or why did you bunny hop on the shot. So why do you constantly blame the officials for someone's inability to complete plays or poor discissions?

 

I would love to have officials show up at your workplace and scream at you about any perceived mistake that you make performing your job.

One could also say when a ref/s makes every call 100 percent perfect, then you can blame the coaches, players etc. That's right, no one is ever perfect.....these days. Everyone is always talking about how tough the officiating profession is. I can think of lots of jobs that are way tougher than just taking verbal abuse from a bunch of screaming fans. I myself work with the public. In 20 years on my job I have listened to thousand's of irate complaining people everday.

I have been in three knock down dragout's, Stabbed with a pair of scissor's,

and come within a foot or two of being ran over by an irate idiot in a van.

Officiating is probably a pretty tuff job "IF" you try and pay attention to whats being said by the crowd. Like all tough job's someone has to do it.

I say if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

Keep in mind, this is High School we're talking about not others, so let's leave those issues relating to Rule #10, out of the discussion.

I didn't feel like making a long story, just kept it plain and simple.

The refs definetly can change and do change the outcome of games. Especially in the 13th region where there is no accountability for refs. I have seen refs not call fouls on certain players until the 2nd half because that player is "untouchable." Anyone who believes that a ref doesn't sometimes determine the outccome of a game is badly mistaken.

 

There are teams that both our football and basketball teams play that you have to be 10-20 points better than to beat. I feel that the KHSAA needs to have a better accountability system in place. Some regions have excellent Ref Associations and accountability, while others have nothing. A team in the area that I follow has lost 5 games this year by 6 points or less and in all 5 games the refing made a difference.

 

I don't disagree that the kids should decide the game, but refs can win or lose a close game, they can also keep a game close. In the 13th Region All "A" the foul calling was so lopsided against one team that it kept the other team in the game and that team ended up winning. The fouls where 10 or 11 in the first half to 3. It's hard to beat a team when they shoot three times as many free throws.

If you are concentrating on the game then you don't hear the crowd, laugh if you want, most of what officials hear is during timeouts and other dead balls. Most is quite humorous as the fans don't know what they are talking about for the most part. Why do you think a number of places only allow positive cheering if you want to stay for the contest.

Just so I completely understand, you're saying the Refs in 5 different games, cost your team the win?

 

Also, you mentioned the lopsided number of calls, against a team but could it be out of the realm of reality, that they committed those fouls, just maybe.

 

You're almost saying the Refs, watch the score, see who is the better team and deliberately, give an advantage to the team who is supposed to lose, is that what I'm reading....

I have been told by top notch officials and have oberved that the good ones never give the crowd a thought. They say they have elephant ears for the players and coaches and mouse ears for the spectator's.

 

I don't recall laughing at all.

 

 

As for fans not knowing what they are talking about, I am sure that some of them do see calls the official missed or got wrong, due to sitting above the action. Officials do get calls wrong and miss calls.

 

 

As for the job, (I think you were insinuating I get a different one) I never said I didnt like the stabbings, knock down dragout's, or barely getting missed by the idiot in the van. Refs can change games. When I played college ball, I knew a ref and he said he could influence a game and not any average fan could even tell.

 

Example: defensive player steals the ball at halfcourt and the offensive player than fouls him. This ref said if I wanted him to score I would have never called the foul.

 

Example: offensive player goes up for a rebound and defensive player may or may not be on his back. He can stop the basket by calling over the back.

So, Strike3 (or anyone else listening), are you insinuating that officials never deliberately make 'wrong' calls? I think it is not as prevelant as some presume, but probably not as infrequent as others think.

All they have to do is 'focus' their attention on a particular player and get him in foul trouble, or call walking to keep him from dribbling, or call 'over the back' to keep him from rebounding, or call charges to keep him from penetrating.

You make some very good points sir, a better accountability system needs to be in place for sure. The All A tournament needs to be looked at also IMO, this tournament is a big event for Single A schools and the regional tournaments are called by officials from within their own region and hand picked by a select few people from what I understand which includes a coach or two from teams that are participating in the tournament. This just doesnt seem fair to me, Touchstone Energy should appoint a committee in each region and there should be a representative from each school on that committee and be involved in the overall organization of the tournament. This committee should if at all possible get officials from outside their own region to call these games just like the KHSAA does for the regional tournaments in March.
