I'm going to vent a little here, so dissect it and let me know, what you agree/disagree with....

 

Refs - Do the best they can and YES, some are much better/worse than others, but nonetheless they made a decision to become a Ref. They also, DON'T decide the outcome of the game. You get 32 minutes, probably 50± shots, 10-12 FT's, 20± Rebounds and 15-20 TO's, to change the outcome of the game.

 

Coaches - Don't take the role, for glory but to offer their knowledge, to make better players and players, into a team. They lose and their terrible, know nothing and can't coach. They win and it's the players, luck or some other factor. Give them some credit and blame, but never all of either.

 

Players - Remember, they're high school age and will undoubtedly, make bad decisions and then extraordinary great plays. Some can shoot, others can't. Some rebound, pass, set picks, hustle or play 1-2 minutes, when needed....others don't. They play too win and don't try to run up scores. What if one team, focuses/devotes hours each week, month and yearly, to becoming better and your players only do, when the coach calls practice....Don't blame the other, for being passionate and better prepared. Be constructive in our evaluation and criticism.

 

Fans - Are always passionate but not always proper. Don't let Dr. Jekyll be you, in a public setting.

 

Analysis - We love to be negative for some reason and look the little things, Ref's, Coaches, Players and Fans do wrong (as we perceive) but rarely choose to comment, on what they do right.

Ref's can and do decide games. It is a fact I dont care what anybody says. I have been a Ref, Coached, Played, in Football, Basketball and Baseball and I have seen it done.

Ref's can and do decide games. It is a fact I dont care what anybody says. I have been a Ref, Coached, Played, in Football, Basketball and Baseball and I have seen it done.

 

I will agree with this also. To a point. Refs do sometimes make a big difference. But not as often as some people think. But like Strike3 says they will not last long.

 

I have seen the effects of home cooking refs more in the middle school games then High School. When a ref after a game walks to the scorers table after a game and takes off his shirt and puts on his home team sweatshirt, smells like home cooking to me.

That's my point, that many perceive but not I. Let's say score is tied at 76, :3 seconds on the clock and a horrible foul is called, team gets to shoot 2, hits one and wins.

 

During the game, 4 quarter were played, missed shots, turnovers, missed freethrows, etc....We only remember the call at the end but not what transpired, the 31:57 leading up to that call.

 

Teams have 8 minutes each quarter, to affect the outcome of the game but we as fans, want to blame the calls at the end.

Those are all good points, but my point is one bad call with 2 seconds does not let the kids decide the outcome in the end.:thumb:

That's what most people perceive but what about the missed FT's in the 1st quarter, or charging call in the 3rd and not a block, or all the missed chances leading up to that game.

 

Why don't we just play :20 seconds total and jump the ball up, see who wins. It's because, that everything which transpires from the 1st thru the 4th quarter matters.

It's when the ref(s) CHANGE the way they have been calling the game at/near the end is what gripes me. Be consistent for the ENTIRE contest.

I believe that is the most frustrating, to Players, Coaches and Fans.

I do know for sure that ref's can change games because they have been caught in the collegiate level and in the pro level and convicted!!

 

They are human and to be human is to err and to say that no high school ref would intentionally make a call to decide the outcome of a game is to err also.

 

To say there has never been a ref with that problem is being politically correct. To say that a ref has never got mad at a coach for cursing him(yes coach's curse ref's) and made a call against him is politically correct etc. etc. etc. You can say if you made this shot and that shot and didn't walkand so forth.....BUT you did do all those things that is a given, and with all the flaws being committed in the game you are down one with 10 second's left, your player Z drives in for a layup and gets absolutely hammered and ref doesn't make the call you miss the shot, ref altered the game.

 

No system is perfect and there is bad and good in all walks of life. I can and have to live with that but I also am not going to deny that it happens because it does, and thats just a fact of life. Just my opinion:thumb:

Keep in mind, this is High School we're talking about not others, so let's leave those issues relating to Rule #10, out of the discussion.

Team x is really, really dependent on their point guard for all aspects of the game, i.e. calm under pressure(press) scorer, rebounder, defender. Next in line for this team is not very good. Point guard gets foul they should have been called for (1st quarter), plus a couple that are debateable(even with the other ref). Yes, I have seen players get called for fouls standing six feet away from the action. Well, anyway point guard sits. Maybe comes back in halfway through second, gets another "either way" charge/block call. Out again. Blah blah blah. We all can see where I'm going. IMO, a ref can change the outcome of a game very easily whether it is intentional or just a mistake or two.

Players, fans, analysis, I will agree with. Coach should want a little glory imo to be a good coach. That doesn't mean he has to tell everyone about it though. Just a smug little warm cozy feeling that maybe, just maybe you outmaneuvered your opponent and checked all his adjustments. No arrogance, just :banana: inside.
