I've played them every year I've been in it. I don't think they were in it last summer. They wasn't in the tournament but I know they were the year before last. We beat them in the semi-finals to play Ashland in the championship. It was a close game though.

Top two 2010 players from Ryle at this point would have to be Logan Carney and Trever Behne. Both will play JV ball this season and will likely get called up to varsity at the end of the season to do such valuable things as chase foul balls, keep the scorebook, guard the 18 invidiuals bags of seeds belonging to the jrs/srs, and maybe, if they're really lucky pinch run once or twice. :walk:

The widespread belief that the "wait your turn" thing applies at Ryle baffles me. So unless you are an upperclassman, you can not play at that program?

 

From the 07 team, didn't Humphrey start when he was a Freshmen? And didn't Wagner and Murray start since they were Sophomores? I'll bet if these guys are presently the best players in the program at their positions, they will get an opportunity to play varsity this year. Perhaps I am wrong....

Yep, you're wrong. Sophomoroes and below are not currently even permitted to try out for the varsity team. This has been going on for several years now. Such is the case when your program has reached the level that Ryle now fins itself. Four years ago, when the program was not quite at the level that it is now, several underclassman (Wagner and Humphries) did make the varsity squad. However, they were the last to do so, or even given the chance to do so. So the "widespread belief", as you referred to it, that you must wait your turn, is actually a reality.

I guess my point was that even though these Freshmen and Sophomores are not given the chance to go to the varsity tryouts, I would find it hard to believe that Coach Roesel does not talk with his JV coach on a regular basis. That way he will know if a player is ready to move into the varsity lineup and play. Those players on the JV team may have to prove themselves first at the JV level but if they are ready, I think Coach Roesel has shown the willingness in the past to give these guys an opportunity at the varsity level.

He and JV head coach Demler have a ton of interaction and discussion. But Ryle's general policy is that a few 8th graders (usually 4) and frosh play freshman ball; a few frosh (usually 4) and sophs play JV, and varsity is comprised solely of juniors and seniors. There are have a few rare exceptions in the past, but that is just the way it's been done the past few years. I guess they feel they have enough solid talent to draw from at the jr/sr level that they don't need to push a sophomore into a varsity role too hastily. It's a nice situation to be in - not many schools around NKY have that luxury.

The baseball program at Ryle has grown tremendously over the past 3 years due to its recent success and if you look at the website, only juniors and seniors can try out for varsity now. I believe that Roesel annd Demler want it that way for two reasons.

1- They know they have tallent in all grade levels.

2- They want the frosh and sophs to get a lot of games in and a lot of learning time with Coach Demler, who I think is one of he best "teachers of baseball" in the state.

 

Having said that, should some unforseen event like injury occur in a key position during the season and a soph is a better option then training an outfielder to play middle infield, the Ryle staff would not hesitate to bring a young player up. Thank goodness they are not in a position to have to do that right now and seem to be pretty deep at all positions right now.
