January 19, 200818 yr I wouldn't mind if they went o-line. Also wouldn't mind if they got a safety, but the d-line definitely needs work.
January 20, 200818 yr Someone aske Peyton and Phillip Rivers what a pass catching tight end can do for an offense. I think a DT is first but in the second or even third round a tight end has to be added. Ocho would definitely get his number then!
January 20, 200818 yr 1. Interior defensive linemen. 2. Ahletic linebacker, like a certain someone named O'Dell. 3. Another DL or Lb. 4. Tight end. 5. RB
January 20, 200818 yr Your last sentence points to a lack of depth. This has been a major concern for the Bengals at many positions. The Jones pick was highly criticized at the time. I think the hope for an OLineman drafted as high as he was is a little more than a pro bowl alternate year. Steinbach was affordable if they let J Smith go. I think the Bengals erred in that choice. I would love to see a Dorsey come in, I just really like Long. How could they not sign Smith when he is their best d-lineman on a bad defense??? No team in the NFL can afford 3 o-line guys in the top 5 of salaries. They have plenty of depth on the o-line; they are not Willie's and Levi's caliber, although it sounds as if some think Stacy is close. They cannot afford an offensive draft pick with this defense. They need a DT, a DE, and a LB in rounds 1-3. They also are in line to get some compensatory picks; they could retool the defense for many years with a great draft (or just tool it in the first place-depending on how you look at it).

As far as Smith, you don't have to sign a guy just because he's the best of the worst. And if Willie and Levy are in the top 5, they are grossly overpaid. And if you have Scott Koostra on your depth chart you have a problem. The Bengals have made critical personel mistakes. Thats why they haven't won a playoff game in, what 17 years?

If the Bengals don't sign their best at a position, then what happens? Willie a perennial Pro-bowler & Levi a Pro- bowl alternate while fighting through injuries-that is not being overpaid. Koostria has filled in with injuries and done fine; backups are not all-stars. They have only been a viable NFL team for 3; it took Marvin 2 years to get them out of a 2-14 hole (how soon people forget); they have dropped the ball in their performance the last 2 years; that is attributed to poor defensive drafting in Marvin's first 2 years; the last 3 they have drafted well. If you read Curnutte's article in the Enquirer last week, the Bengals have the 5th or 6th most draftees in the NFL, so they are not doing too bad; Marvin and staff need to put it all together, and they need to avoid the injury bug as much as possible, and be a little lucky-like every team in the NFL.
