Last 11 seconds...

Featured Replies

To spin off of the substitution thread going, I made a comment on there and would love some feedback in regards to it!

Why do coaches put players in for the last 11 seconds (or 8, 9, you know what I mean, meaningless time)? There is no special scenario here. Game is well in hand either up a lot/down a lot.

I as a coach have always believed if it more embarassing to the kid than not playing. What are they really going to do in 11 seconds? Any other thoughts?

For some schools it may have to do with receiving a Varsity letter. For example, you get a Varsity letter if you participate in 1/2 of the total quarters for a season. In this case, they could be doing them a favor.

So is that a KY thing? In ohio if you are on the roster, you get a varsity letter no matter what kind of time you play.....that is interesting! Or at least the at the 2 different schools I coached at (school policy, not mine).....

I dont think that means much here. He posed a question about putting in a player with like only 11 seconds left. You can do that every single game and they still might not get the amount of time they need. So I dont think that is the thinking at all...

I know I am totally against coaches doing this. Because as you said, it more embarrasing for the kid for the coach to put them in for really anytime under a minute. I mean maybe the coaches think they are doing a nice thing by doing it, but they really are not.

Back in my freshman days(early 90s) I remember a specific instance of going into a game with 19.1 seconds left along with another player off the bench. We looked at each other and said, I'd rather not even go in at all. But that was us. Some girls out there cherish those few seconds of playing time, especially if thats the only time they ever get. Plus in some cases some girls get a shot off in that little amount of time to get their names in the scoring column.

However now as a coach if I can't get them in for at least a minute, I won't put them in at all simply to not take a chance of embarassment or have the parents come up to me and say how ridiculous that is.

Incorrect at some schools. It is quarters played in, not amount of time played. So, that 11 seconds count the same if you had played all 8 minutes.

Oh well thanks for correcting me on that. However as I said before, if I was a coach I would not do that to a player and put them with that few of time left in the game. Because in more cases than not, it would be an embarrasment to the player...

UNLESS you are playing in the state tournament at Diddle or Rupp Arena. Then I would do it and let their names get into the record as having played in a state tournament.

Don't most schools use a total percentage of games played. Like 25% of the total games played, so that 11 seconds is a game played and could mean a lot towards earning their letter.

Some schools might. I think each school sets their own standards for lettering.

I think sometimes coaches do this so the player who is coming out can get a nice round of applause and recognition for an exceptional game. I think this is ok if the substitute is a young player who has a couple of years left to actually contribute to the team. I would not sub in an older player with only a few seconds left.

I'm sure every school has their own rules but a lot of the time this IS the case--either quarters played or number of games played in.

As far as being embarassed to go in late in the game: the coach is in a lose-lose situation sometimes. Do you NOT put them in and have the parents complain about them not getting in? Do you put them in for 30 seconds and have them complain that it's an embarassment to go in that late? What's the cut off? 1 minute? 2 minutes?

:thumb: And at some schools you just don't know what it takes to letter because those in charge don't and won't share that info with you. Probably because they make it up as they go along.:ylsuper:::rolleyes:

I always side with the coach, he/she should know their players, he/she should understand the situation. I have seen coaches ask their players if they want in late in a game and sometimes they do but most times they say no thanks.

To acknowlege a senior at the end of their career or a player with a superb game with a late substitution is a very classy thing we all have appreciated over the years and is a great example of a late sub.
