Highlands going forward after injury to Nic Simpson

Featured Replies

Thats old news. I believe the real reason Drew didnt play was due to a shoulder injury from football that he is having checked out. No reason to risk re-injuring it in basketball when you are trying to land a scholarship in football. Trust me, no injury and Drew plays and he contributes. If he knew he wasnt going to play this season, why did he travel all across the US this past summer with his AAU team playing in Vegas, Orlando, Toledo, etc ?

Not the scuttle I heard in the stands. Didn't know Drew was injured...sure didn't play that way...he was outstanding!! Can't see why playing hoops would prevent FB offers?? As for the AAU expenditures, it lends more credence to a player-coach riff. Drew obviously loves the game and has the abilities...must be what???

The last I knew, Drew Simons "chose" not to come out for the basketball team despite the wishes of his dad. I would just like to know why you always feel the need to try and bash on the basketball program? I do not seem to recall all of this glass half empty mentality when discussing the football program in the fall. This team is going to be just fine as evidenced by their performance last night. They have one of the best, if not the best, coaches in the region just as they do in football yet he seems to get a lot more criticism for his playing style and personnel decisions. I ask why is that?

What are your thoughts on the remainder of the Birds' season now with Simpson out 4-6 weeks and McGraw still dealing with the nagging back injury? I am hearing reports that Simpson's injury probably will have him out every bit of 6 weeks and McGraw doesnt seem to be able to play on consecutive nights which may hurt them come tournament time.

Luke Stein reportedly is not going to end up joining the Birds as he recently had surgery on his wrist which leaves Michael Eaton and Zach Hurtt as the only Seniors left. Willie hasnt played any Juniors so it looks like its going to be the super sophomores. I know Kowolonek and Watson have started since day one and can hang but others like Grote, Grubbs, Lother, are all going to have to step up. Will the coach work Guidugli, Turner and Messer into the rotation? All Juniors and all kids who really havent seen the floor excpt for JV games.

Should be interesting when you take Simpson out and then worry about how much McGraw can go the remainder of the season. Outside of those two, its a lot of inexperience. I really thought this team had a shot at winnign the 9th but now I am not so sure.

My sympathy to the team, my son has yet to play this season for LCA out with a knee injury, so I know how frustrating it is to think why might have been. Hopefully the kids can find a way to win despite the injuries.

I agree JOAT. Its okay to pull for kids who arent seeing the floor but Willie is winning ballgames with what he feels is his best team. I think DMZ actually acknowledged that Willie is playing the best kids in an earlier post where he actually attended the game so not trying to bash him either. Willie isnt getting outcoached and demands physical, tough defense. He is making do with what he has. I am just glad they actually have more than one scorer this season. I expect Simpson to be back for Districts when it matters. If the other guys can step up and gain valuable experience until then that just makes them better.

Maybe it has something to do with the 17 going on 18?? Seriously, I'm not "bashing" who's playing...I just would like to see the team at the best it can be. The boys play with great effort and heart (and that's all you can really ask for!). And don't think Dale gets a "free pass". Check out some posts about QB's, play selections, kid's playing time, etc... I like Willie...always have...but reserve my right to disagree with him. But in the end...he be da' Coach! And I wonder just what "factors" went into Drew's "choice"? ???

Drew Simons isn't a basketball, football/basketball, or basketball/football player so I guess they will have to go on without him AND Nic Simpson !

To the point at hand........... I have been impressed with the play of the team regardless of who is out there. Coach Schlarman has obviously created something that is working pretty well. With the exception of the Shelby Co. game (without McGraw and hotel fatigue!) they have performed very competetively and the senior leadership is strong. The development of the younger guys is encouraging ............who knows, maybe coach knows how to develop a "basketball" team after all.....stay tuned !

Saw him play. Very good player. Hope he makes it back before end of the season.

I think Highlands will go as far as McGraw can take them. He will need to average close to 20 the rest of the season.

If he's as good as Sorrell, that will be easy.

And here I thought you were smarter than to listen to the scuttle butt you hear in the stands. That info is about as accurate as what's posted on here sometimes.:D

Drew definitely had a shoulder problem this year. It wasn't publicized for what should be obvious reasons. Makes you appreciate some of the big hits he had in the playoffs even more. They were very painful.

...depends on whom you're hearing the scuttle butt from...by the way, can I borrow some of your "grains of salt" for my driveway? (lol)

Very true.

I didn't know you were shoveling/salting your own driveway. Isn't Klump still doing that for you? :D:D:D:D

^ I believe Lumpy has enough of his own to shovel...something about "lake effect" !!!
