January 16, 200818 yr This is an ABP story on Huckabee's roots as a pastor and the history of his ties in Southern Baptist life. http://www.abpnews.com/2970.article From the article.... “If you look back at who Huckabee was as a candidate in Arkansas, it wasn’t all this ‘Christian leader’ stuff,” he said, referring to a caption in a television commercial Huckabee ran in Iowa prior to winning that state’s Republican caucus. “He governed much more as a pragmatist, not as an ideologue.” Privately, some close to Huckabee and familiar with Southern Baptist politics say that leaders like Land and Pressler simply don’t trust him because he refused to be a loyal foot-soldier during the SBC wars. “That’s the neat thing about Mike -- he can be a close friend with a Jerry Falwell and he can be a close friend with somebody extreme on the other side,” he said. “I think the practice of his faith is more in line with the Rick Warren approach. It’s a ministry-driven kind of faith that’s concerned with making a difference in people’s lives. Sure doesn't sound like he is an SBC zealot
January 16, 200818 yr Not true. There is a link on here in P & R that Dems are making a concerted effort to bring faith into their campaigns. For the first time, each Dem candidate has a faith advisor to their campaign. They indicated that each and every Dem candidate is promoting faith and religion in their campaigns. It is just not getting the national media coverage the Republicans are getting. It would appear that the national media want to continue to portray the Republican party as being the religious party. I know what you are saying but what I meant is that the Republicans, while unfortunate that the media tries to say they will put their faith-first, benefit from their faith as well because many Republicans (me as one) vote largely on social issues.
January 16, 200818 yr Here are some exerpts http://www.flickr.com/photos/sftrajan/2126522950/ A blog on Huckster by an eastern Ky blogger http://ekyprogressive.blogster.com/huckabee_equates_gay_necrophilia.html And from the economist http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2007/12/the_huck_stops_here_1.cfm Also. Everyone's favorite Gomer Pyle lookalikes ties to Christian Dominionists. http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2008/01/06/1249 The first two are blocked, so I cannot read them. The third, he listed it in a sentence with other stuff. Is that the link between the two? On the last one there is a lot of stuff about what other people believe but even the link says.... It’s hard to know where Huckabee himself stands in all of this since he is coy about addressing how he sees the role of church and state.
January 16, 200818 yr It’s hard to know where Huckabee himself stands in all of this since he is coy about addressing how he sees the role of church and state. So, if you address the role of the church, you're a theocrat. If you don't address it, you're coy and hiding something.

I read them...I find it a stretch, to say the least, to state that he "equated" those things together. He did mention them in the same sentence though. As for the East KY blogger thing...there was nothing in there that was eye opening. It seems to fall in line with the majority of Republicans, IMO. And you addressed the last one...just because I'm friends with someone doesn't mean I'm 100% on board with everything they think or believe. I think you nailed it lbbc...it looks like people are reaching for something to make him look bad and hurt his campaign. Huckabee isn't perfect...like all the candidates he has flaws. But, this one is a reach, at best.

The last link points out that Huckleberry has associated with these dominionist folks. One of which co-authored the book "Kids who kill" which includes these gems of wisdom

But, trying to make anything bigger than a difference of a opinion out of it is useless.

One of which co-authored the book "Kids who kill" which includes these gems of wisdom If you are going to judge Huckster with those he is associated with, than judge Obama by the same thing when viewing what HIS church says. I am pretty sure that if you are going to view Hillary by those she associates with you are going to find some very unsavory characters. Many links are blocked for me by my worksite.
January 16, 200818 yr ^Morehead, which of the above 3 linked quotes do you take issue with? With the exception of the word "necrophilia" in the second quoted paragraph, I agree with the statements in all 3.

January 16, 200818 yr Author ^Morehead, which of the above 3 linked quotes do you take issue with? With the exception of the word "necrophilia" in the second quoted paragraph, I agree with the statements in all 3. I take issue with Huckleberry and mainly all the religious right trying to impose their beliefs on the society as a whole. Huck Pyle's comments about ammending the constitution to be more in line with God's ideals are all about trying to impose one group's Christianity on the rest of us. I am a Christian but vehemently disagree with the religious right and its association with the SBC (that's why I left). I also find Huck's constant religious talk a little disturbing and there are people who will vote for him only because of it.

I also find Huck's constant religious talk a little disturbing and there are people who will vote for him only because of it. The MAIN reason why you think he has constant religious talk is because that is ALL the media shows. Even at the last debate, Huckster wondered why he was the one and it seems the ONLY one to get the religion questions. The media are trying to paint him as the religious candidate by only showing that. For you, it seems to be working.
January 17, 200818 yr Author The reason I stopped being republican is b/c of the religious pandering. And if Huckleberry wasn't constantly saying something to the effect of "vote for me I'm a preacher" then I might like him more. His fair tax is not a good idea IMO either. The only GOP candidate I would even consider voting for is McCain b/c he seems like someone who'll stay out of people's personal lives. But he's for the war so that takes him off the list too. Huckster is running as the preacher guy. Like it or not. Giving sermons in churches while running for president doesn't help the issue either.

Jim Wallis of Sojourners that would never be confused with a far right group, has even taken up Huckabee's battle that the only message getting out about him is the one you quoted. That is message is much more than that but the national media won't promote it. On the last statement, I guess you will not consider Hillary who has many times gone to the pulpit of churches to deliver political messages.
January 17, 200818 yr Author I have no problem with giving political messages in churches, I have problems with political candidates giving sermons. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/06/AR2008010602261_pf.html
