coach4life Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I was watching a game today and a player went to save a ball out of bounds and tried to throw the ball off of a player from another team so her team can retain possession. Heads up play, right? That's what I thought but the referee called a technical foul on the player. I couldn't believe it. There was no warning and it was within the first two minutes of the game. Is that really supposed to be a technical?
JBCousins Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Where did it hit the other girl? How hard was it thrown? Did she "know" where she was throwing it or was it more blind luck?
TubbyCAT Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I would love to see an explanation on this! If it was not done deliberate I can't see how it would be a technical.
Mr. Athletics Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 It should be against the rules but it's perfectly legal to my knowledge. Never heard of a "T" being call. The official must have ruled it an intentional flagrant act. I believe it is against the rules in international ball.

Did it hit the other girl in the face? I have seen that called as a technical, but it was on the inbounds pass, not when saving the ball from going out of bounds.
Wireman Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 When I played, I threw the ball off an opponent's stomach and it wasn't called a technical.
Big Game Player Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I've never seen it called a T , but I have seen them give them a warning. I watched a players intentially hit the player in the face and the ref told them that they were suppose to aim below the face.
sidelinereporter Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Please re-read the first post. A Technical was called. Not a Intentional Flagrant Technical. The wording counts here. If the word "Flagrant" is in the penalty that means "Ejection" There are Unsporting Technicals Flagrant Technicals Double Unsporting Technicals and Double Flagrant Technicals. If the player is jumping out of bounds and throws the ball off of an opponent it is usually just a violation and the ball is awarded to the team that did not hit it before it went out of bounds. If there was a Technical Called, it was probably a judgement call by the official that the opponent tried to intentionally hit the opposing team in the face or something like that and ruled unsporting behavior. I have never seen a technical called for this type of play because 99.9% of the time it is a hustle play and the person trying to save the ball in bounds has no idea where the ball will land when they throw it at a player.
kysportsfan4life Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 When I played, I threw it off of someone's face, not intentionally, but that's where the ball ended up, and nothing was even said. I've never heard of this being called a technical, but I have seen some pretty violent hits from kids trying to save the ball from going out of bounds and wondered how far it could go before being called something.

That's what I'm saying - I have thrown (and had it thrown) off the face and stomach and I've never seen it called.
