Both Fugate boys have left the team. It's so very frustrating to not be able to sustain a stable program in Breathitt Boys Basketball. Changes in administration and different connections and pressures end up gutting us every 3 years or so. They should have left Baker alone, he had resurected the program and had it moving toward the top. But ( change in administration)some were determined to see him gone and Coach Hall came along. Two great years then a rebuilding season (and a change in administration) and they sent him packing. They should have left him in place. It's a mess really, attendence is way off and I 'm not sure they will get out of the district. Sad deal for everyone concerned.

Wouldn't think so. I look for Colby to graduate and then Channing to continue playing football, but I don't know that for sure.

Fair point. But after Breathitt's 15 or 16 point loss to Buckhorn they are 5-6 I think. I think Coach Hall would have kept this team together and they would be in the top 3 or 4 in the 14th this year. But, it's one of those things we'll never know. We can be certain of one thing however, something is wrong with the Program at Breathitt.

 

I would agree that Breathitt is having problems right now, but It seems a little quick to assume the program is doomed. Seems like a lot of parents tried to get involved and those may be gone now. They played first game last night with a new point guard that needs experience. They have lost six games, but most of these teams were decent teams:Allen Central, Knox Central, Pikeville, South Laurel, Buckhorn, and a team from out of state.

I don't disagree with anything you said, mainly because I don't know that much about the situation, however on the transfer issue I don't think it is up to a school to release a student athlete. This is a decision that is made 100% by the KHSAA.

Actually I think if it goes unchallenged by the school the kid is leaving the KHSAA doesn't rule on it. They make a decision when the sending school won't release the kid. It came up a couple of years ago in football is the only reason I heard a bit about it. 5wide is right on but I thnk maybe Noble would have transfered or not played even if Doug hadn't gone to Owsley.

I can't say on that issue, because I don't know. However, considering the circumstance, I think his departure was a much different case than the others...

 

...and my understanding is that Breathitt County can sign Noble's release giving their OK for him to play at Owsley, or they can refuse to. Ultimately, the KHSAA can do what they want, but it certainly makes things much easier when the school he leaves signs off on his transfer. At least, that's always been my knowledge, but I could be wrong.

I hated that Allen chose not to come back to the team, as he was a key player that Coach Banks could put in the game at crucial times. As for Combs, I still don't understand why he wasn't starting, not to mention the small amount of playing time he was getting while on the team this year, especially with his level of talent and his position as a teammate who could also be used during critical periods of the game.

Flash, thank you for responding. I had forgotten about Hollan quitting and then being convinced to return. As a matter of fact, didn't Colby Fugate quit this year before his first full week of his practice, only to be convinced to return to the team? Nonetheless, I must agree that the players who left indeed left the problems behind. I've read a lot of posts that point fingers at the parents. That's not to say that parents can't be a negative influence; we know they can, but in this case, with high caliber players just walking away, something is going on that the public eye can't witness. I'm not sure if it's the coach, the school administration, or a combination of things. One thing is definitely obvious - this team is falling fast, and I really hate to see it happen.

The school must indicate whether or not the student athlete participated in varsity athletics in any sport while attending that school.

Schools do have the option as to whether to oppose a transfer or not. They can fill out a form in opposition and then a hearing is scheduled to determine eligability. Most schools don't oppose for the kids sake but some do. This year Owsley chose to oppose the Congleton kids transfer first to Lee Co.(the county in which he did reside and had for most of his life) then when he went to Breathitt.

It seems sort of strange that Owsley would oppose a transfer of one of theirs when the Evans kid played varsity for Wolfe Co. last year. They seem more than willing to benefit from his play for them! His parents still live in Wolfe Co.

I agree. Also look at the others who have transferred in. I don't blame Owsley for fighting for thier transfers but remeber it goes both ways. I was hoping the Noble kid would get eligable, because his transfer is for family reasons and he should have been allowed by Breathitt to play. Remember it is the kids who lose a year of high school ball and they can't get it back. Adults should think of the kids in these matters and forget thier personal agendas.
