Question: How many Div 1A players were on their best teams Recently? How many were on the '96 through '00 squads? The 2003 team?

 

Things are different these days in Northern Ky HS football. The Highlands Bluebirds are starting to get some credit and respect throughout the Tri-state. They were talking about them the other day on national TV!! The next couple years they are really going to produce some D1's

So because one kid's Dad is on an HBO show and the colleagues mention the high school all of the sudden they are going to produce several kids running 4.4 forty yard dashes and bench pressing 400 lbs? Having a name like Collinsworth on your squad will probably bring more Div 1 coaches to games but that doesnt always gurantee they are going to be scratching bunches of names in their notepad. I think they have tons of talent, dont get me wrong and the kids work harder than most schools in KY but it takes a special player to be considered D-1 caliber.

How many kids do we see go D-I and end up playing their junior and senior year on special teams only? Honestly, is it worth saying you went D-I to sit the majority of four years on the bench? There are four other divisions of football that are played at a VERY high level. The bottom line is, if you're good enough to go to the NFL, they'll find you. That's why they have the combines.

 

If my kids are ever blessed enough academically and athletically to be offered an athletic scholarship and offers are on the table from a big D-I, small D-I and D-II schools. I'll try to talk them into taking a real hard look at the small D-I and D-II schools.

...and D III schools! Good post. Parents and child must be realistic. Stand back from the all letters in the mail and be honest with your son and yourself!

Totally agree and you could include NAIA. I was just giving an example. Playing a sport competitively in college is truly a privilege...

Unless people are saying, "there is no way that kid is ___ years old" while he is playing at every level of youth sports, then he is probably not going to be a Division 1 player. Those kids must be physical marvels to even get a chance to play Division 1. I couldn't agree more with those who say, who cares. There is NOTHING better than HS sports. I love to watch heart, and you see more of it in HS sports than at any other level because size and speed are not as important. So enjoy, it goes way to fast.

Didn't Coach Mueller say that there were 7-8 DI seniors on this team's roster? Have those kids committed to go to schools? Just wondering if anybody close to the program can get us up to date....

I think this is part of Coach Mueller's standard speech at the beginning of each season. I don't think he lets facts get in the way of a good speech. Reality is usually a little bit different.

Its called Muellerspeak. There used to be another guy at Highlands who used to love talking to the papers but it was while coaching the roundball.

 

Since this is D1 for 2008 I wont go there but I too am curious.

..at this point in the 2008 season, it's safe to say that HHS has 7-8 sure fire D-1 prospects and will have the fastest, strongest, most athletic team ever at Highlands. The season will be absolutely AWESOME !! Check back in December for reality!!

Of course, Michael Jordan got cut from the varsity team when he was a Sophomore in HS, so there are exceptions.
