No where in the Bible does it say that it is a history book. No where in the Bible does it say it is to be taken literally and inerrantly. It "is useful for rebuking, correcting and training in Righteousness" it is not meant to be a science nor math book either.

 

"Do not add or take away" could be as easily applied to making it literal and inerrant. By doing so you are adding more to it than was intended.

This seems to be the opinion of the majority of BGP's members who post here. I'm curious on how it is decided which parts are real. If there are any untruths in the book, doesn't that make the whole book suspect? And if the whole book is suspect, isn't the entire Judeo-Christian religion also most likely a collection of myths?

 

I understand that many of you believe it to be a collection of stories and parables designed to teach some vague concept of how we are to conduct ourselves, but I can't grasp the concept of believing some but not all.

An all loving God WOULD NOT tell the Hebrews to kill innocent women and infants - or to celebrate the bashing of childrens heads against the stone as the Psalmist says.

 

If I am forced to believe the picture of God drawn in the Old Testament without the filter of Jesus Christ and the knowledge that those authers could have misinterpreted events then I end up where TFRF is now.

 

The Bible was written by people struggling with their faith walk just as I am, they were inspired by God, but God did not write it, nor did God direct their hands. God may have directed their hearts.

Interesting that you believe that the OT authors could misinterpret events but the NT authors couldn't misinterpret events of Jesus? Why the difference? Are the NT authors better or had more faith? Why are they easier for you to count on giving accurate view of the NT over the view of the OT?

 

Is it because the answer is that you want your view of it to be true?

 

For personal reasons that occurred to me this week, I hope your view of everyone getting to Heaven is true. Cause I lost a person in my life that was not an immersed believer. It's just Scripture doesn't indicate that. And that saddens me to the core.

Again, not to be argumentative, but if we decide some things are inaccurate or overly emblelished, I just have a hard time believing any of it. Who decides which part to accept and which to reject? Do we only accept those that describe God in the image that best suits our personal opinion?

Got to confess: That first paragraph reminded me of Otter's speech before the Greek Council in Animal House: "Well I for one will not sit here and listen to you bad mouth the United States of America."

By not taking it literally you could be taking away what was intended.

Aside from the book of Proverbs (which are stories, parables and examples of how to live) all of it happened or is going to happen (Revelation). I believe in Adam and Eve, 6 days of creation, the flood, the 4th Man in the fire, Elijah and Elisha's exploits, Jonah came out of the fish and went to Nineveh, Moses went up on the mountain and brought the tablets back, Daniel came out of the lions den, David killed Goliath, satan was kicked out of Heaven and he is busy trying to steal, kill and destroy, Namaan was healed when he went into the muddy water, Job suffered and lost everything and gained more then he had, Sodom and Gommorah were judged by God for their sin, the walls of Jericho came down with a shout, the Red sea parted and they went through on dry ground and on and on.

 

If you believe in God and know God you know He cannot lie and if any of it is not true then we are wasting our time. I believe its all true and literal.

If you lie to me once I will never believe anything you say again. I believe every word to be true or I cannot believe any of it. Samson killed exactly 1000 Philistines. If not then there might has well have never been a Sampson. I believe every word is true and through prayer, study, and the annointing of the holy spirit, I will understand anything I need too.
