Red River Shootout (Powell County)

Sounds like someone got a taste of their medicine. I can remember the days of the early 90's at Pulaski and how folks felt going to Somerset for a game. They probably felt a little bit like Pulaski seems to be feeling at the moment.:dancingpa

I doubt any of these kids/coaches got a taste of their own medicine, I do not believe they were playing or coaching at Pulaski in the early 90's.

You obviously haven't been to Pulaski since the early 90s then. The Maroons do not get "homer" calls as others get. Especially over the last 3 years. Just ask anyone who played them in the region & I'm sure they will tell you Pulaski does not get a favorable whistle anywhere. Not saying refs had a vendetta or anything, but there is PLENTY of game tape @ the high school that will make you shake your head.

Sorry--just referring to Pulaski as it was known in the past. I thought some of the folks involved in the 90's were still involved.

It is very true--I have not been and probably will never be. No reflection on anyone--just not a trip teams from our area will ever make again. Not fun to drive several hours to get beat regardless of the talent levels. Sounds like you feel that way also.

The ironic thing about all this is Dave Fraley came to Pulaski from Powell County. They even honered Dave Fraley a couple of weeks ago when Pulaski played Powell @ Pulaski.

How many free throws did Breathitt shoot in some of their Regional Tourney wins of the past?

I don't know, do you? I've never witnessed a debacle like the Powell/Breathitt game @ the 14th Regional in Powell Co 3 or 4 years ago. I was attending basically as a neutral spectator but cheered for the 'underdog' Breathitt Co team when it became so blatantly obvious that the home team was going to win this game.

Winning call, btw, was a whistle blown 2 or 3 seconds AFTER the last horn sounded resulting in a foul on Breathitt and Powell Co awarded 2 free throws to win the game. Breathitt led by about 20 points earlier in the game.

When I saw that the KHSAA actually documents games where 50+ freethrows are attempted (aka 'awarded), and that Powell Co is in 10 of the top 20 games in KY basketball history.....50% OF THE 'MOST FREETHROWS' ATTEMPTED INVOLVED POWELL COUNTY!!!

And if there were another tier involving 40+ freethrow games, Powell would still be in there. 30+.....yep. I'm convinced that they would have MORE 30+ freethrow games on their home floor than any other team in the state. In fact, maybe someone saw that you make the record book if you shoot more than 50 and now it is held to under 50.

Someone should investigate it, but the KHSAA is swamped with other things. Only those dusty old record books document it for us. No one will document the 'less than record' status.

I too was there as a neutral fan. If I am thinking correctly PCC and Breathitt was on the same side and at halftime Breathitt was in full control. The 2nd half became so obvious what was going on that even the PCC fans started cheering for Breathitt. It got so bad they had a huge fight to break out with both teams and the fans. It was ugly. The next night was just as bad agains PCC. Except it began at the starting.

Usually during the state tournament I am for teh 14th, but I couldn't make myself support a team that literally had the region handed to them. I even thing that Breathitt or PCC could have won a game or two that year at state.

I felt the same way. I believe the 14th Region is at Powell again this year.

I know that people yell 'homer' pretty often, but there is some substance to back up the Powell County bias. I fully expect it to continue this year. Against Pulaski Co it was a 30 point difference being 'home'. Give any team just 20 points and it can be hard to beat 'em.

I was not able to attend the game but have heard about what is perceived to happen. First of all you can expect to go away to any school outside your region and should not expect any breaks. The history reported about all the records is there because a Powell County fan decided to list all records and I do believe if all schools listed all their records you would not see Powell Co with all the records. I believe the officials at this game were quality and the official that is talked about is a very honest official that when you make a little upset may give the other team a break. I have been on both sides of the coaching end I have felt my team has had breaks and My team has been on the short end of several games. I have come to realize over the years to accept the fact that some teams get breaks at home and the favor is returned on the road. It is not right for the kids but that is basketball in Kentucky. Also I heard the same reports from Powell County fans who traveled to Pulaski Co earlier in the season and My statement to them was we were on the road, Why expect breaks.

gilligan, you may be correct that a Powell Co fan sent the 'facts' in to KHSAA, but I still find it incredible that Powell Co shot 89 free throws in one game. Do you really think this is NOT a record? I only brought up those old records because I personally witnessed the 14th Regional Tournament at Powell at few years ago and saw the most lopsided calling I've EVER saw anywhere (and I've saw plenty of bad ones). It seems that Powell has a documented history of such things.

The history is documented because it is on the KHSAA website because an official/or fan at Powell County actually has taken the time to enter the old records. As for the game in question, I guarantee you that I had the best seat in house and the officials in the second quarter started calling the game closely. The Powell players backed off a little as to not pick fouls. Pulaski continued their physical play and continued to pick foul after foul. At the end of the the Pulaski coach showed very poor sportsmanship as did their fans.

You should pop yourself some corn and watch the tape again. Oh and take off your rose colored glasses.

I don't know what game you watched but it sure wasn't the same Red River Championship game we are discussing.

I am very aware of the game in question with the 89 free throws against number 1 ranked Louisville Shawnee I also know who was coaching at that time who you should know well Powell County did receive help and to the players credit they did hit their free throws and in a very important game in Powell County history we knocked off a #1 ranked team. The very next year we traveled to Louisville and paid the price! We did not cry over the game because we got what was expected on the road. And yes this still happens if you think it doesnt, just open your eyes. Unfortunately, the kids pay the price for adults to get the results they want. I am in no way saying that this is right but it is what it is sad but true. I have been around long enough to know that all the talk and gripping isnt going to change the way some things in sports are done. Everyone should know that this should be about the kids not the adults or officials but sometimes that is forgotten.

Right, it should be about the kids. Officials who are found to invent calls or purposely not see calls should not be officials. There needs to be some kind of accountability. There are some very good officials out there and one bad apple can make the whole crew look bad.
