Red River Shootout (Powell County)

Featured Replies

Pulaski County won Friday morning, defeating Newport Central Catholic in OT 63-62. PC was down by 20 in the 3rd qtr but battled back to get the win. Heard Shawn Whitis & Isaac Hart each had a very good 2nd half, pretty much taking over. Pulaski defeated Woodford County Thursday night, so w/ the 2 victories in pool play, PC will play in the Championship game Saturday night 6pm @ Powell County high school. Good luck PC!

Overall has been a great tourney. Pulaski won a great OT game yesterday. Never led until the final buzzer. Newport Catholic is a great defensive team. Finals tonight Powell/Pulaski.

Can anyone tell me how this tournament ended up?

I was very impressed with the organization of the tournament and how well it was put together to be the first annual.

Dr. Hemlick please report to the NewCath bench the coach needs you.

Now, that's funny.

Powell wins in OT over Pulaski. Great tourney. I was very impressed with Newport Catholic. Very disciplined and well coached.

Powell County shot 35 free throws in the Championship game, compared to 5 by Pulaski County. Looks like Powell may have trouble getting teams to play in that tournament next year. The officiating was atrocious in each & every game of the tournament. Good luck finding suckers to come back next year. Oh, did the old ref get on the all-tournament team along w/ the Powell players? He was absolutely their MVP.

Powell Co holds multiple state records for the number of free throws shot at home. According to the KHSAA record book:

Most Free Throw Attempts - Game (Min. 50)

# School vs. Opponent, Year/Date (A/M)

89 Powell Co. vs. Shawnee, 1972 (70/89)

63 Cordia vs. Powell Co., 11-21-89

61 Dayton vs. St. Henry, 1991 (45/61)

59 Bell Co.vs. Evarts, 3-6-01 (45/59)

57 Calloway Co. vs. Lone Oak, 2001 (46/57)

55 Pikeville vs. Phelps, 1956 (41/55)

55 Powell Co. vs. Wolfe Co., 1966 (44/55)

54 Webster Co. vs. Providence, 1965

54 Powell Co. vs. Lexington Catholic, 1971 (47/54)

54 Webster Co. vs. Graham, 1983

52 Henderson Co. vs. Hopkinsville, 1-21-00

51 West Carter vs. Menifee Co., 11-26-94

51 Powell Co. vs. Hazel Green, 1971

51 Powell Co. vs. Model, 1967 (38/51)

50 Powell Co. vs. Madison, 1977

50 Powell Co. vs. Hazard, 1978 (N/A)

50 Powell Co. vs. Hazel Green, 1965 (37/50)

It seems very fishy to me and I wouldn't blame any team for refusing to play there.

WOW!!!

How in the world could something like this go on for so long & nothing be done, or even mentioned about it by the KHSAA? Of course, a lot of those games were several years ago, but I would like to see the FT shooting discrepancy in the past year or 2 for Powell @ home vs. on the road.

Pulaski simply destroyed Powell 2 weeks ago, winning by 30 @ Pulaski. So this team(Powell) gets 30 POINTS better in just about 2 weeks? Or, are they just that good on the "Home" court?

I would hope that it is last time the Maroons have the "privilege" of participating in the "Keystone Cops" antics that take place in that gymnasium.

Powell won the 14th Regional Tourney about 3 years ago on their home court. They defeated Breathitt County in an early round by shooting about 47 freethrows (vs Breathitt shooting about 15). Eventually defeated every other team in the tourney in a similar way.

If this post and the posts following it are true, then any officials, administrators, or whoever may be involved in some sort of old boy network at Powell should be ashamed. 35-5 from the foul line isn't even trying to make it look good, it's just, well, I'm sure most on here know what it is.

The day of Homer referees ended about 20 years ago in most of the state, which means Powell should be catching up in another decade or so. :sssh:

Sounds like someone got a taste of their medicine. I can remember the days of the early 90's at Pulaski and how folks felt going to Somerset for a game. They probably felt a little bit like Pulaski seems to be feeling at the moment.:dancingpa

You evidently haven't witnessed any Regional Tournaments in Hazard---at least a few years ago when the eventual Regional Champion had one player awarded 25+ free throws.

How many free throws did Breathitt shoot in some of their Regional Tourney wins of the past?
