Question about "playing up"

Featured Replies

I've heard that in the near future (perhaps in 2009) the KHSAA will not allow any team to "play up" in football class over what its male student enrollment figures dictate, unless the team chooses to "play up" all the way to 6A. So, a team like Highlands, which is supposed to be in 3A but has been allowed to play in 5A, would then have to choose between playing in whichever class their enrollment numbers dictate (likely 3A) or playing in 6A. Is this true, and will any exceptions be granted (such as taking into account geography and distance from district opponents)? When will this go into effect? I would appreciate any details anyone has to offer about this!

I suspect you won't see many(if any) teams playing up in that case.

Would LOVE to see HHS play up with the big boys, even if it's only for those two years.

Don't know where you heard this, but its news to me and it definitely has not been acted on by the KHSAA so its impossible for anyone to know when it goes into effect.

I'm hoping that the KHSAA does not do something stupid like this. If geography and distance is a legitimate reason to permit a move up (as the current policy recognizes) then why would they force some school so effected to move all the way up to 6A? That makes no sense.

Furthermore, based on this year's playoffs the only school that moved up and won state was Highlands from my recollection of whom moved up. And to his credit, I don't recall Coach Wallace of Bowling Green whining about it. And really when you think about it, if you have multiple classes in football based solely on the philosophy that larger schools have an advantage over smaller schools, any large school complaining about smaller schools moving up into the large school classification is in effect admitting to themselves, their supporters, their players and the state that their program is not as strong as the smaller school"s and cannot successfully use their size advantage to beat the smaller school.

As for the exception due to geography and distance from district opponents, that's already the only way the KHSAA permits a team to move up.

Me too. I bet the 6A Nky coaches don't want to see that.

They certainly don't!

You would be surprised!!!! If this is mandated in 2009 i suspect Highlands will move up if allowed.

You would be surprised!!!! If this is mandated in 2009 i suspect Highlands will move up if allowed. Highlands would win the Nky district almost every year and will also take their chances against the Louisville teams. It only makes sense for Highlands to stay in Nky and play in the 6a district than travel to Lord knows where each week to play a district game.

There aren't any 3A schools nearby? If that is the case then I could see Highlands and CovCath doing it.

Cov-Cath would be 4a, but i would bet they would move up along with Highlands.

There really weren't any 3A or 4A schools in the three counties considered to be N. Ky. To the east, Pendleton Co I think was 4A, but that was about it. I remember reading somewhere (on here?) what the proposed districts would be like if Highlands and CovCath stayed in their respective classes and it just wouldn't have made sense to not let them move up and play in a district with Dixie, Scott and Holmes. Grant was moved into a new district to avoid a 6 team district but I believe their super was more than fine with the move.

In which case welcome to 6A. I think the addition of the Bluebirds and the Colonels would solidify 6A as the toughest class in the state. :D

A class with Trinity, St.X, Highlands, CovCath, Male and Manual is pretty tough to beat if you ask me.

Maybe Lexington Catholic could be talked into doing it

Trust me, the source of this was nothing "official" by any means... it was posted on a posting blog for an online newspaper a few weeks back. If LN has not heard anything about it, then (hopefully) it's just a rumor.

It may be a rumor, but it certainly is a good discussion starting one. :D

Then we'd have KY's own version of the GCL, just with some public schools in there too.
