just because I swing my arm and it may "look" like contact, there is a difference between "looks" and actual "contact".......

if they called all fouls on "looks" there would be a foul on every drive to the basket, every rebound contention, every hand check. however, they only call the "look's like it" foul on blocks which is total garbage for the few players out there who can actually do it correctly!

Aren't they supposed to call fouls when "it looks like a foul"? What else are they to go on?

I agree, I see it way too often. Just because their arms go up to block a shot they get whistled for a foul. It irritates me that actual obvious fouls are going on up and down the floor that no ref is calling and then a girl tries to block a shot with her arms straight up and get called for a foul. Almost like they are not allowed to play defense under the basket. And after a couple of those "so-called" fouls you can tell that girls are afraid to play defense under the basket. It takes them out of their game.

If you watch those same officials call a boys game, you will probably see a lot of fouls called in those games too. It's pretty much the official. Some of them let you play and some don't. If they let boys block shots, they will probably let girls, but if they call it a foul with boys, then they definitely will with the girls. Don't think it's a girl/guy thing at all, although it may seem that way. Just how certain officials work the game, it's not right but that is how it is.

North Laurel's Makenzie Prichard would usually get two or three a game the last couple of years (and I'm sure this year is no different) but would frequently be the victim of some ticky-tack foul calls on blocked shot attempts.

Officials that know what they are doing can evaluate contact. When I used to run the floor, if the ball was blocked and then a little contact was made (emphasis on the word "little"), I almost never called a foul. Now, there are people out there that do not know how to evaluate the contact that is made....if it "looks like a foul" they call it. It should be a foul before it is called.

 

and Yes...women can block shots, play "D" and do all the things that the guys can do. The question to the officials has to be...do you have the guts to not blow the whistle when it just "looks like a foul" and take the crowd booing and the coach eating on you.....

Couldn't agree with you more. It seems refs call fouls esp. on blocks when it "looks like a foul" just because they don't want to hear it from the crowd or coach.

However, you can't always blame them, they can take quite an abuse during a game.... but thats what they're paid for:D

C-Town #12 - Thanks so much for saying what so many of us have been thinking for quite some time now. I have yet to see what I would consider a "quality officiated game" this season. This has been the seen in girls games for quite some time. So glad to hear others see this too!

My .02.... if a player 'slaps down' in close proximity to the offensive player, then fouls are usually called. Boys or Girls.

 

Lots of times the 'swat' will carry the defender into the shooter. I always liked to swat when I played, but found out the hard way that the refs don't. It sure is impressive when you swat one up into the bleachers though lol.

 

Swatting to block shots and slapping as the dribbler goes around you usually result in a whistle.

I said nothing about "hearing contact". Alot of times back in the day, things "looked" ugly or it "looked" like a player walked. The meaning is it had to actually "be there" for it to be called. Sometimes there is a blocked shot, and the force of the block causes the player to go to the floor. That "looks like" a foul, but really is not. Hope that clarifies what I ment.

As LBBC said officals already have the idea that a block is a foul for girls, I've seen a few girls that can actually block a shot, like to see if there was one that could dunk.:ylsuper:
