Can girls block shots?

Featured Replies

Kendall Noble from Breathitt can block shots and them not be fouls. I don't know how many block shots she had last year.

I would bet that the greatest majority of blocked shot fouls are called because of contact on the torso not what happens with the hands. The other night there was a great block off the hand (in a girls game) and a foul was called, the defender also had her other hand in the middle of the shooters chest. That is a foul. The fan in the stand is not always looking at the entire picture. See how many referees report pushes or holds and not hacks. I could go on but won't.....

I will give you that to a certain degree. However, just because girls don't elevate as high as the guys, they get penalized for not sending the ball into the stands or out of bounds. When they block "all ball" and no body, it looks and sounds like a foul, but the only contact is with the ball.

I agree, if the other hand is on the shooters body, it is a foul. PERIOD. But when they both go straight up, and no body contact, the officials call fouls based on appearance and/or lack of respect for girl athletes being able to do it correctly....

I think it's probably no big secret that we've seen more girls blocking shots in the past few years since the rise of volleyball, and that the better middle hitters and outside hitters on the volleyball squads are finding those same skills translating to the basketball court. It might do some of the refs who usually do girls BB games to watch some volleyball as well so that they realize many of these girls have some leaping ability.

Bingo 32 minutes!! most of the refs who do girls basketball get in the rut of making the foul call on blocks regardless of what really took place. I think it has to do with the difference in elevation when girls block shots. Although some girls can really jump, most of the time their block is coming closer to the release of the ball from the shooters hands, opposed to boys where players are able to block shots after the release, so the seperation between the ball and the shooters hand makes it easier to discern a clean block. I think that coupled with (in most cases) the difference in talent levels between officals that do girls games opposed to boys makes for a lot of sterile calls in girls games.

C-town, you actually said it better, or at least what I was trying to say!

I give you that a lot of those are missed. In today's game of really pressuring the ball you don't get a lot of those looks because everyone is bodying up. You don't see much "coming across the lane" to get clean blocks.
