A couple of random observations on the weekend ...

 

Class 4A state champion Lexington Catholic lost two games this season. The first was to St. Xavier, which lost the 6A title game in overtime. The other was to Highlands, which blew away the competition to win the 5A crown.

 

Also, Paducah Tilghman had two losses to teams on last-minute field goals. They were 2A champion Fort Campbell and 3A winner Central.

Forgot to mention Louisville Central, who also played both Highlands and St. Xavier ... and Manual, who might have been the #3 team in 6A.

Add to that- Lex Caths two pre-season scimages were agianst PRP, and 6A Champ Trinity.

6A Trinity: National Champion St. Xavier, nationally ranked and 6A runner up Lou. St. Xavier and 5A runner up Bowling Green.

I think Catholic's schedule prepared them well for the playoffs. People forget that Catholic only beat Boyle County 18 - 14 (could have gone either way) and Harrison County 14 - 0 during the regular season. A tough schedule does prepare teams for the playoffs.

Here is the thing with us mountain teams. Belfry tried to get Bell County, they wouldn't work out a deal due to travel, but played SC. Tried to work out a dealw ith WV powers but they wouldn't. We pretty much played who we could. We are at a geographical disadvantage in getting a schedule like Central has, I know Haywood loves to play those kind of games.

Fort Campbell played Graves County (6A), Warren East (4A), Paducah Tilghman (3A), Franklin-Simpson (4A), Owensboro Catholic (District), and Trigg County (2A), they also scrimmaged Marshall County, and Warren Central. Although not a powerhouse schedule compared to some, it was tougher then previous years when they played the likes of Reidland, Heath, Muhlenburg South, and Webster County (all district games previously). Their last three games were against OC, Trigg, and Franklin-Simpson which IMO better prepared them for the playoffs then in previous years where the ended with Muhlenberg South, Webster County, and Reidland.

Beechwood also scrimmaged Highlands and Boone, as well as played the Class 2A runner-up

You won't find the WV teams playing you guys because a loss to Belfry would really hurt their playoff chances in WV. Granted if someone beat you guys it would really make them jump in the standings but the drop in standings with a loss it too great.

 

If WV went to a system like KY and have districts and the non - district games didn't hurt a WV school you would be able to pick up more WV teams.

 

I know a couple of years ago Matewan WV would have played Belfry because it would have been a good matchup back then. Belfry probably would have won but been a good game. Since the loss would have killed Matewan they stick with teams like Phelps.

Oh yeah I lnow that. Logan is wanting to get Belfry on their shcedule, because they jumped to 3A, but thatt still wouldn't be much of a step up from the schedule now IMO.

Yeah Logan wouldn't be more of a challenge than you guys already have. Really the overall problem is that Southern WV is losing so much population the teams are losing their strength. They still stay competitive with each other but to compare them to teams like Belfry they are falling way behind.

 

Matewan had some teams in the early 90's which would have gave Belfry some great games. Williamson in the 80's. Gilbert in the late 80's to mid 90's.

 

Those were some good teams but they are pale imitations now.

Bell Co. wants 0 of Belfry as they have proved over and over again that they will not come play here and Belfry is not going to do a 1 year away deal.
