My qustion is why do we get "out of town officials" in the first couple of playoff games when we play teams in our own district? And what part of the state?

 

Because that's what coaches want. That seems like a flip answer, but it is the answer. And officials are assigned to playoff games from anywhere else in the state except (for the most part) your own region.

Not sure what happened in that situation, but if you were told breaking the huddle with 12 is not in the rule book for high school then you were told correctly.

 

Do you know what the rule is? Most bgp guys do because we have talked about it yearly on this site.

My #1 comment about officiating is that when the team that won the game says the officiating was terrible then the officiating was terrible.

 

There are great officials and crews out there, and people that put a ton of effort into the job. Then there are the rest that don't do justice to the blood sweat and tears that the players and coaches in this state put in.

My perception of the rule is exactly what the rule books says. The rule says a replaced player must leave the field immediately. Thus, you have to know the definition of a player, a replaced player, a substitute, and what constitutes immediately. The rule book does not say it is a foul to break a huddle with 12 players. The NCAA rule book does, but the NFHS rule book does not.

 

Thus, if the 12th player reaches the huddle, the huddle breaks, and the new 12th (the replaced player) leaves the field, it is not a foul.

Well, I feel sorry for your region! Remember that there will be a sping officials clinic sometime in March 2008 that your region's officials can attend. Maybe that might help. Good luck!

I always read the BGP thread for the games I work before I watch the tape so I know in advance which plays I screwed up. It wouldn't be near as much fun if passionate fans weren't sitting in the stands.

I cant agree more. We, or I think I speak for most all officials, don't officiate for the money or the recognition. We do it for the love of the game. We do it because we are competitve. We strive to get it right, to make it fair, and to keep all players as safe as possible.

 

I would like to say thank you to 99% of the players and fans for another great football season. I am already looking foward to our spring clinic where we can begin to dig back into the rules study and see friends in the profession from all over the state.

 

Let me finish by saying that if you are at all interested in football and you share the same love of the game that we do. You might consider becoming a football official. Most all officiating associations are always recruiting new officials. Have a Happy Holidays, and looking foward to a new football season.

excellent. I'm can't remember for sure but that might be how I got my start 10 years ago.

 

 

Its easy to sit in the stands and have opinions or watch it in slow motion from one of 10 different angles and make the call.

I agree that most of the time the Zebras do a fantastic job at a thankless task!

 

But there are always exceptions to the rule. Times when you cannot imagine how a call was missed, calls that you do not need to see in slow mo to see that they were botched. The worst of these, in my opinion, was the Highlands VS Elder game at Paul Brown stadium when the Highlands player scooped up a fumble and was headed for pay dirt and the official called the Elder player "down by contact". The picture in the Enquirer the next morning showed the Highlands player picking up the loose ball with the Elder player standing right next to him. The Elder kid never hit the ground. He lost the ball, watched the Birds player scoop it up and started giving chase. Down by contact?

 

By the way, back then they still played the controversial plays on the jumbo tron. Everyone in the stadium, including the refs got to watch the play 2 or 3 times.

 

Still, the Zebras do a job that I would not try in a thousand years and for this I thank them!
