Iran Gave Up Nuke Weapon Development in 2003

Featured Replies

Didn't see a thread on this so I thought I'd throw it out.

It seems that US intelligence reveals that Iran stopped developing a Nuclear Weapons Program in 2003.

Any thoughts?

In 2005, the NIE was highly confident that international pressure had not lessened Iran’s determination to develop nuclear weapons, and yet now, in 2007, the intelligence community is just as confident that international pressure had already done the trick by 2003.

In 2002, one of the conclusions offered by the NIE, also with “high confidence,” was that “Iraq is continuing, and in some areas expanding its chemical, biological, nuclear, and missile programs contrary to UN resolutions.” And another conclusion, offered with high confidence too, was that “Iraq could make a nuclear weapon in months to a year once it acquires sufficient weapons-grade fissile material.”

Let's just say I don't have a lot of confidence in NIE's. Our intelligence capabilities are still greatly diminished by reductions in the 90's and will continue to be subpar for perhaps decades.

I understand what you guys are saying and probably agree with where you are coming from. However we went to war on the word of these guys and now we want to dismiss them. You're right, there record isn't that good; but it is interesting that the intelligence under this administration can not seem to make the right calls at anytime when it comes to "being right."

With the current intelligence perhaps it would be safer if we just got out of the middle east completley, and didnt fool with it.

Or just turn it into radioactive glass.

I take a different tack on other nations obtaining nukes. I tell them they have the right to obtain them, but if they use them anywhere in a first strike, their nation will cease to exist.

The Intelligence has been bad since Nixon. He started the funding cuts that have left us with a shell manned by people like Valerie Plame. Don't delude yourself into believing this just came about; it was the same Intelligence outfit that concluded it was O.K. to save money on at-sea refuelings for our destroyers and that the ports of the middle east were suitable for re-fueling; Voila, U.S.S. Cole.

I understand what you're saying. I guess I get a little frustrated at this.

We went to war in Iraq based on Intel that Bush told us was the best out there and it appears it was very wrong.

Then he tells us Iran is on the verge of being a nuclear threat and now intel says it is not so. But Bush is telling us that the same intel people got it wrong this time.

Do you understand why I'm so confused and that I'm skeptical to believe this administration?!

I guess "curveball" was wrong once again. This time we realized it before we went it.

Why are you confused? They bought the first info and got burned, so why wouldn't they question it this time? Makes perfect sense to me. Burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice, shame on me. Also, let's face it, people want to believe things that confirm their own beliefs. We see it on here daily.

The administration is not producing the NIE's. They are mainly coming from the Intelligence community.
