In all fairness though I believe GRC has some players playing up to varsity that didnt play,Maybe Gold can confirm this.

You are right mhighfield.

I knew this would be a one sided game. 5 of our Freshman do not play Freshman ball. They all dress for the varsity and 2 of them start. Also one of our regular starters for the freshman team did not play, due to sickness. This is not a measure at all of the "Freshman class" at GRC this year. They are loaded.:thumb:

Obviously differing philosophies at the two schools. Clark County - maybe out of necessity this year - plays frosh extensively. Mason County lists "the big 3" - Gilbert, Setty and Pawsat - as the only freshmen on their varsity roster, but they did not dress for the first two games in Lexington last weekend.

Usually you can look at varsity games and freshman games and get a handle on where programs stand. JV games not so much because of differing approaches to JV playing time. Maybe this is one of those occasions where freshman classes can't be truly compared in a freshman game.

All that being said; how did Mason County's "big three" do tonight?

Freshman basketball is a joke. Most teams freshman are starting JV and playing many minutes on varsity if they are good. In Mason's case, the varsity and JV are loaded and while the freshman are very, very good, they won't have much competition.

This hasn't always been the case. When Coach Strong was here Freshman played only on the Freshman team...didn't matter how good you were ( Wes Burtner) You played varsity when you were Juniors. When Coach Humphry came in...he started a Freshman his first year here....Preston Knolwes. Last year he started a 8th grader, Robbie Stenzel. He believes if you are good enough...you will play. I like his approach.....watch out for this Freshman team in the years to come.:thumb:

I like this approach also. Play your best 5 and build for the future at the same time!!!

I like this as well. You should always play who you think can help you win. It all starts at the middle school level though. Developing those kids at an early age is what makes the future bright.

Disagree somewhat, Mason's first game of the season was at Lex Cath, and they lost by 5 to a very very good freshmen team. They will play at Covington Catholic Christmas tournament and will face great competition. Freshmen basketball is not a joke, you often find a diamond in the rough by playing these games. If you can find 6 players that can contribute on the freshmen level, your program is pretty solid and that is what Mason County has and just one of the reasons why they have a solid program throughout. Firm believer, the more you play games, the better off you are.
