What makes a good high school guard?

Featured Replies

I think being like a coach on the court is #1, and being able to pass, knock down open jumpers, freethrows, and handle the ball under pressure is separates the best from the rest.

Heart!!!

Must have great court vision and the composure to get your team under control in pressure situations.

Heart.

Desire.

Being able to knock down key shots in key areas of the game.

Good Free-throw shooter.

Good defender.

Good ball-handler.

Any combonation of 3 or 4 of those and you have a pretty gosh darn good guard.

Very well put allso someone with ICE water in there veins, When it comes down to crunch time they want the ball in there hands, they wanna be the go to guy, having a few areas of the game that a coach cant teach you either you have it or you don't.

A short memory, especially if you're a PG or a shooter. You can't dwell on a mistake!!

Your absolutely right because once you do think about mistakes your done for the rest of the night:thumb:

I agree with all uou guys so far. I also think that upir guard needs to be smart with the ball in his hands and not force a bad shot or a bad pass.

If we're talking about point guards, the bottom line is if he doesn't commit turnovers, and can hit 70 percent FTs or better, he can handle the rock for me any time.

I think court vision and handle are the most important. You have to be able to anticipate and make quick decisions. The ball simply has to be part of your hand and you have to create. Dribble penetration is key as well.

The biggest issue I see with guards/wings is the overall inability to feed the post. Too many times, they simply don't look. Other times, they look but hesitate until its too late. Then if they do decide to pass it, they make a poor pass (usually they pass up the bounce pass which would work).

The ability to get assists and to know your team strengths and weaknesses.

Assist to turnover ratio.

Leadership qualities(vocal and action)

Knowledge of time, situation, opponent, other players on the floor with you, etc. The point guard should know the strenghts and weaknesses of teamates and opponents to help put them in the right situation at the right time. Needs to be an ASSISTANT COACH!
