Simply the point guard is an extension of the coach on the basketball floor.

 

He has to have complete command of his ball handling skills so that he can go wherever he wants on the floor while seeing all of the remaining part of the floor.

 

He has to be able to throw any and all types of passes with either hand.

 

He has to not only know his cuts in the offense but EVERYONE else's cuts in the offense and where they start and should end.

 

He needs to know the strengths and weaknesses of his teammates. WHere they like to catch the ball and where they can catch the ball. For example, post player cannot make a move to his left, he doesn't feed the post when the defense is playing him to ONLY make a move to his left.

 

He needs to have first step quickness to blow past his defender and get into the lane creating open shots for his teammates.

 

He has to have very thick skin and ignore all the comments coming from the stands.

Heart.

Desire.

Being able to knock down key shots in key areas of the game.

Good Free-throw shooter.

Good defender.

Good ball-handler.

 

Any combonation of 3 or 4 of those and you have a pretty gosh darn good guard.

 

This is what I think a good guard would make. To be a point guard you just got to have confidence and just have the heart and desire to run the court. Their are a few guards out there right now that have all these things!

Dont think it could be said any better, Maybe add that along with the thick skin he also needs to be able to handle heat from the coach alot of coaches like to have someone on there team to prove a point with and many cases its the Point guard. :fire:

I think the number one thing that seperates a top point guard from those just playing the position is controlling tempo. Of course he needs to be able to handle ball and pass well to accomplish this. When to go uptempo, or slow it down because uptempo might be the strength of your opponent.
