Final. First boys game played in Boone's new gym, anybody have any stats or info? Did Boone missing football players play an impact?

Sheena Giwa of HC scored the first ever basket in the new gym.

Giwa had 26 pts and Sorrell had 23 for HC, McFarland led the Rebels with 16.

Boone led early and HC finally got the lead late in the first quarter or early second quarter. HC dominated throughout the middle of the game, leading by 20 at one point 62-42 I think.

It was all Boone Co after that point. It seemed like HC tired a little and Corey Sorrell was spending time on the bench with 4 fouls. The Indians hung on though and won by the final margin of 6 pts.

I have no idea if missing football players had an impact or not.

Of course Boone missing FB players had an impact. There are several good BC Football players that are also very good basketball players. One that comes to mine (Cory Farris). Once they have them back Boone will be hard to beat IMO.

So Corey is playing again?

The next varsity game I coach will be the first so take that into consideration.

With that, if I'm coaching Boone, I put McFarland at the top of my offense. He's 6'5 and very good with the ball. If you place a tall kid on him, he's going around them. If you put a kid who is shorter but can keep up with him, you then get McFarland down low.

Giwa was the best player on the floor. He made life tough on the young PG (who I think is going to be very good) for Boone.

Looked like the first game of the year. Bad shooting. Bad FT shooting. Lots of hustle on both sides. Still a bit rusty all around. HC played 11 players in the first quarter and wore the buzzer out with substitutions.

Boone's new scoreboard shows the five current players for both teams and their point totals. There were NUMEROUS substituitons in this game. I have no idea how the poor guy at the scorer's table kept up so well. It is very hectic trying to continually switch all those numbers and point totals so quickly while under constant stress.

I wonder how long they'll keep this feature!

IMO, McFarland is most effective down low. Undersized Boone needs his rebounding. He can help bring the ball up the floor against the press as needed against bigger, stronger defenders. I think a zone defense or box and one on Sorrell would have stopped Giwa's penetration. Almost all of his points came on right-handed layups. I don't think Boone played much, if any, zone defense. When they pressed, it was effective, but they were limited on the amount they could do that because they only have 7 of their varsity players right now. Turnovers and 11-21 free throw shooting were the difference in the game. If Boone made the same good percentage of free throws as Holy Cross, they would have won the game. Giwa and Sorrell scored about 2/3 of their team's points. Reardon, the other senior, had 8. Nobody else on HC scored more than about 3. Boone had 4 kids in double figures. HC was in the double bonus I think the entire 4th quarter, so this hampered Boone's efforts to come back. Almost all of HC's 4th quarter points came from the charity stripe.

As any young team, Boone will have its learning moments. They will continue to get stronger as the season goes on, and I still think they can be one of the top teams in the 9th.

I'm not saying he stays on the perimeter. His shot is not good enough to live out there. I'm saying use him to penetrate, score and/or dish. He's then in position to rebound.

You have to take advantage of mismatches and he's a nightmare if he's on the perimeter against a "big."

Yes, he is a good penetrator because of his big frame. Sorrell seemed to be a little quicker.

HC did not shoot much better at the line than BC. Both were brutal.

What were their FT stats? It seemed they made about 2/3 of their free throws for most of the game. If Boone shot 66% FT for the game, they would have won.
