Talk to him about it, you never know what he might be going through, and is it a constant thing?

Ask if he has a cooler. :D

Just kidding talk to him about it first.

No, just happened today. I am in no way in charge, but I knew he was drunk about three hours into the work day, he smelt bad. I told him to go home, and I would tell the bossman that he was sick. I plan on having a talk tomorrow, just don't know what to say exactly. This is a first for me. For the record, I'm not going to rat him out, I believe in second chances. Plus, the guys got a family.

It passed through the brain for a second...

When I worked at the State Department last summer I was witness to Friday afternoon shot-taking.

Was he sneaking around or drinking at his desk or what?

We operate somewhat heavy equipment (Bobcats mainly) on this job. However, the job just depends on what we are on (enviromental cleanup crew). He was fine coming into work, but after the first break he was stumbling and slurring his words. That's when he admitted to me that he was drinking and I told him to go home. I told the boss that he didn't feel good and that he went home. I would like to keep it between me and him, but if this is a repeating pattern I'm not sure if I could put up with it.

Well, I have nothing against adults drinking if they so choose but I'll say this:

Drinking + Heavy Equipment = Death or serious injury

Make sure you consider that when you are deciding how to handle the situation.

If he's operating heavy equipment, that's a major problem, because he's endangering himself and his co-workers (read: YOU). I'd tell him it better never happen again or you would throw him under the bus. If you think he has a substance abuse issue, might be a good idea to help him seek help.

You tell the congressman to sober up. There's a vote coming up soon.

This is a problem that I have always heard about, but never had to face first hand. Heck, I like drinking occasionally but never let it effect my work or personal life. I know I must say something, but I don't want to get the guy fired or get him so frustrated that he quits. We operate somewhat heavy equipment but normally when we do I'm operating. I don't work with this individual often, so at first when I saw him stumbling while I was operating I thought he was diabetic. That's when I jumped off and asked if he was ok. Again, I just want to make sure I say something and I want it to stay between me and him.
